I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 with 2 gb RAM, T7200 Intel Centrino Duo @ 2.0 Ghz and of course Vista Ultimate.

I have all of the Vista goodies turned off and before I had any problems, it seemed a lot slower than I would have thought.

A few days ago, I installed Frontpage 2003 on my laptop which already had Office 2007. That's when the SHTF.

Now, every time I open an Office program, Excel, Word, Outlook, I get a window that says it's configuring Office. This happens EVERY SINGLE TIME!

I've tried the MS program that cleans up the install, but it doesn't fix my problem.

I got this laptop used from an acquaintance and they do not have the original discs, and Dell no longer has the Restore Discs either. They did send me a new Vista disc though.

I swear I feel like tossing this thing across the room. I've been using Windows since 3.1 and this is the biggest POS since Windows ME.

Grrr.

Rant to be continues I'm sure.

Dell has a nice forum that has helped me several times. I am getting used to Vista. Just bought my second computer with Vista (Satellite L305-S5894). Been working great, but I have not installed anything other then Firefox. Seems like Vista is OK until you find something that is not compatible. Let us know what happens to the Dell once it goes across the room...

Used? There ya go. Most computer problems are not the OS.

Put Linux on it if the problems are too much to deal with. You can put on VirtualBox and run your Windows apps like Word and such since the world runs on Windows.

Oh boy, now that's going to start a war. I've found in 20 years of working with PC's that the hardware is very very reliable. If there is a problem it's *almost* always the OS or other software running on the PC.

I've been using Vista Ultimate on my cheapie laptop for several months and haven't had a problem that I can remember. I had more frustration trying to get stuff to work in Ubuntu than anything in Vista.

I've been on Vista more than a year and have not had problems with it. Set it up from a clean install, installed most recent versions of the drivers, Office 2007 and my other software, NOD32 anti-virus, and SpywareBlaster. Turned it to "Windows 95" graphics settings and was on my way after a little UI fine tuning.

It took two hours, but it runs better than units that cost three times the money do out of the box.

I'
v ehad that happen at work, and many colleagues too. A re-install fixed it. Annyoing as all [censored], i know.

I've uninstalled Office 2007, and Frontpage 2003. Then I went through the Registery and cleaned up any traces of Office and reinstalled it.

After all that, it's worse then ever.

As soon as I got the laptop, I wiped out the HD and reinstalled Vista Ultimate. Though I wasn't thrilled woith the lack of performance in a laptop that must have cost well over $1000, it wasn't until I installed FP 2003 over Office that I had this problem.

As for getting a Mac, I got an old G4 from my Mac-Head brother so I can play with it. Don't even go there as I can't even get the POS paperweight to boot-up. Or I should say I don't knowo if it's booting up cuz nothing is coming up on the monitor.

Vista is not the cause of the problem. Installing an Office 2003 product on top of a PC that Office 2007 products on it is the culprit.

Google the problem, you'll find the answer.

I suggest giving Front Page the heave-ho. MS has newer web creation tools that are far better IMO.

Not a Vista problem. People blame all kinds of unrelated stuff of on Vista.

Got news, Front Page 2003 is garbage combined with Orifice 2007 on our XP machine as well. Chucked it all. Run Open Office on all machines now, including Vista. Along with 3 different web publishing software programs. No issues.

As I said, I've uninstalled FP and still no fix.

I've Googled, I haven't found any solutions that I see.

If it's so easy to find the solution PLEASE post a link as I couldn't find it.

I'm just trying to run the regular Office 2007 programs - Outlook, Excel, Word.

The message that I get is that Windows Installer is trying to configure Office 2007. IOf I let it alone, it finally opens the prgram. This may take anywhere from a minute to forever. When I click on cancel, it does go into the program eventually.

Have to agree with you here. Being in the industry, at least in my little corner, software is usually always the cause of issues, while the hardware like you said is very reliable.
