I’ve been using Mobil-1 0W40 in my 2004 BMW 330i. Quaker State 5W40? Maybe also in my old schools??

I’ve been running M1 0w40 since day one in the BMW. I just saw this QS Euro 5w40 at Walmart for $22.97! I know QS makes quality oils as well. Would I be downgrading going to the “5w”? I’m actually thinking of using this in the ‘64 Falcon and ‘68 Buick as well since they have mild hydraulic flat tappet cams.

QS 5W-40 and 10W-60 were used by Ferrari dealerships just over a decade ago, they changed back to PP and the QS was dumped at Big Lots...

It’s not obviously a downgrade from M1. The base oil is thicker and HTFS is higher than both SN and SP versions of M1 0W-40 using estimated HTHS values. They are both excellent and top notch.

i'm in the exact same boat. went through my stash of M1 0W-40 for my K20 civic Si so I grabbed 2, 5qt jugs of the QS 5W-40 on sale for the same great price. for my application, if i see an ACEA A3/B4 or Porsche A40 cert on the back its good to go in my mind.

so far i've recorded no real difference in fuel mileage and it idles very quiet. can't believe you can get an oil this nice for basically $4.50/qt.

for reference i've used the Valvoline 5W-40 when it goes on sale as well, and that's been perfectly fine too. most "big box store" oils these days in that performance tier are excellent.

It's fine.

How does LL01 apply to old flat tappet camshafts?
Ah, Sorry, my bad. I forgot about the second part of the question.
I would personally use different oils for different applications. Mobil1 15W50 had very high ZDDP levels, and as far as I know, folks who have older engines use that oil.
In M54, I would use QS 5W40.
