Is Viscosity the Least Important Aspect of a Oil?

Wow...my faith in the BITOG forum has been restored. One of the most intelligent conversations I've seen here.

What vicosity would be required at 100C (212F), 5.25 cSt SAE 5-20

125C (257F), 5.25 cSt SAE 30

150C (302F) respectively? 5.25 cSt SAE 40

The above are considered minimum viscosities at the temperature specified as per an SAE/GM paper on minimum lubricant films in engines.

Thank You! This lends some creedance to the FRPP Advisor who told me:

Drag Racing = 5W-20

AutoX = 0/5/10W-30

Road Course Below 80F (27C) = Synthetic 10W-30

Road Course Above 80F (27C) = Synthetic 10W-40

Reasons are that most oils, especially dinos, thin under high heat and shear stress; synthetics much less so.

So a dino 10W40 would suffice or a synthetic 10W30 should suffice.

The last temperature is an extreme that is rarely seen.

Do a search on viscosity and clearances as well; I know we have had at least two prior discussions on each.

These are nice general values assembled by one of my favorite groups of people, namely automotive engineers, but aren't some adjustments needed for the particular design of the engine?

Hey Gene, I think you may have a typo in your profile. Shouldn't your occupation read SOB, instead of SBO?
