Thanks, interesting but I was actually looking for a reasonably priced additive to restore the same performance oils had prior to their castration as opposed to going out and spending $15/quart for new oil when I have multiple cases of very good oil (Castrol GTX, Valvoline Synpower, Formula Shell, Quaker Synthetic, etc...) which will work fine except I really don't want to run without the ZDDP protection.

Red Line Break In Oil additive will boost the ZDDP levels. 1 OZ/ qt of oil will give it a nice kick. It runs about $13/bottle and it will treat 3 5 qt sumps. Add it to your stash, for more info contact Red Line via phone, they'll tell you all you need to know. At the 1OZ/qt dose your cat conv will be fine. Honestly in a sound engine not burning oil the cat shouldn't be an issue.

Careful not to go too high on the zinc additive. My TB zinc plus would raise the ppm to more than 5000 if I used the whole bottle. Surely that would upset the oil's own additive package and overwhelm the detergency. It says to drain it out after 1000 mile break-in for that reason. I use only a calculated amount to raise the zddp content into the 1100-1300 ppm range. I recommend contacting the maker to find out what the zddp content is of an additive and making your own calculations from that if you're going to use any additive at all. According to a reply from Lucas, the TB Zinc Plus is 38,500 ppm ZDDP. I also contacted Redline about their break-in additive and they told me it was 17,000 ppm ZDDP.

That's the stuff I'm talking about. 1OZ/qt of oil should give you an nice ZDDP boost.

Depends how you define a nice kick. From another source about Redline zinc additive:

For the concentration in the 16 oz bottle. Assuming you dumped the whole bottle into five quarts of oil, the resulting Zinc levels would be about 900 ppm. I'm not really sure how I could see that one 16 oz bottle treating 12 quarts.

The full 16 ounces in five quarts gives a 900 ppm lift, which means one ounce per quart (a five ounce add) bumps it about a 300 ppm bump. Pretty negligible.

I had run some numbers with a well respected BITOG member, and here is what he came up with: One ounce per quart is going to boost a typical SM (about 700 ppm phos) to 1275 ppm. That is by no means extreme. That is lower than advertized levels for Valvoline VR-1. I called Redline myself and confirmed those numbers.

I have a few bottles of the once-popular SLOB laying around. I remember most people saying they would use about half a bottle per oil change to boost the zinc and phosphorous levels in an SM PCMO. I think this stuff is long gone from store shelves though.
