Is this really Mobil 1 5w-30?

Doesn't look like any recent formulation of Mobil 1 (the vanilla, PCMO version).

The kv40 and kv100 are correct for a 5w30, they must've crossed two voas, because the kv40 is too low for a ck-4/cj-4 10w30 HDEO, and the kv100 is too thick to be an fa-4 oil, and that add package screams HDEO.

Zn and P look too high. Your sample has no Mg. Mobil 1 usually has ~650-850 ppm from the adpack, likely an Infineum package many of which contain Mg.

Gentlemen I've been messing with you. It is Mobil 1 5-30 from the early 80's. It is SF rated and states on the can up to 25k oil changes. It sold for $3.88 a qt. at a discount auto chain in the Washington DC area.
I wish I knew what the base oil was....PAO??

I don't think you fooled anyone.

That is really cool, thanks for posting!
Always been curious what early M1 looked like.
And yes, this would have been a majority PAO oil, with some Ester to balance out seal shrinkage.
Interesting to compare this to Amsoil’s 25k 10W-40; a VOA of that was included in Blackstone testing old oils series they did about 10 years ago.

Very interesting…If you go back to April in this section, there is a VOA of Delvac 1 ESP 0W-40, and it has almost the exact same add pack and TBN
When this oil was Esso XD-3; they used to state that the base oil was mostly PAO, and we know early M1 was mostly PAO…makes you wonder if it is the same chemistry at play here - PAO base, and calcium-based detergent pack allows for much longer OCI’s than the TBN would leave you to believe.

It i interesting to see the lack of additives and the amount of zinc and phos. Didn’t we have cats in the early 80’s?

Because out of the hundreds (if not thousands) of reformulations, expecting someone to guess and "speak up" as to what that voa shows is asking too much.

Still interesting on its own merits though.
I was having some fun with the thinkers on here. No serious expectations. I've never seen an oil like that and wanted to see what others thought. Seems not many were interested anyway.
