Is there something I'm missing about changing the oil filter??

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but that hasn't stopped me from asking in the past.

The oil filter in my 4.0 Jeep engine is thoughtfully placed so the hole is facing the ground. Every time I remove it, all of it's contents pours all over my engine, and then to my driveway. Is there something I'm missing here? Is there any way to avoid that?

Just put a big catch pan under where it runs down I guess.

That's what I do, the problem is it gets all over my engine. What the hell were the designers thinking??
