I was over at Napa the other day, and next to the M1 there were cheap-looking bottles of NAPA-distributed full synthetic in 5w-30 (green label), 10w-30 (blue label), and 15w-50 (getting familiar, red label).....what gives? Should I be spending $5/qt on M1 when NAPA is $3.49/qt? Is it the same formulation of Mobil 1, I should say?

No, they are not the same. The NAPA synthetic has a much weaker additive package than the M1 and a Total Base Number (TBN) that is about half of what M1 has. In other words, the NAPA oil will give up the ghost much soon than the M1. I would not run the NAPA more that 4,000 mile. On the other hand, you might be able to run the M1 10,000 miles.

I was told a while ago that NAPA's dino oil was Valvoline. I don't know if the syn is made by Valvo or not.

It says bottled by Ashland Oil for Napa on the dino bottles, so yes it is bottled by the same company that makes Valvoline but it might not be exactly the same.
