Is it bad to move a hydraulic attachment back and forth quickly?

Say for example an excavator or front end loader where they shake the bucket back and forth rapidly to get the last bit of sand out. I even did this on a fork lift to empty the garbage in the dumpster because one the dumpster was too tall and two the garbage can was too heavy.

Nothing will happen to the hydraulic system as they are not using full pressure and even then there are pressure release valves. It is in your example putting excess wear on the holes for the pins and the bushings throughout the machine.

Shaking violently drives the grease out of the joints and is hard on pivot bushings as JL says.

Sometimes you gotta do it - but dont do it when you dont need to.

Yes the mechanical linkage will take the most of the abuse but over time it can have detrimental effects on check valves and such.

Things get shock loaded, but they take it just fine for many many years. Those parts on heavy equipment are way stronger than say some ones 4X4 that is doing jumps over dunes or what ever. Those little dinky spindles that your tires spin on can take huge shock loads . Just hit some huge holes in a road. Or speed around on some back roads. Those auto parts are small compared to stuff found on equipment. And then there are items like wrist pins that take some super huge loads, into thousands of pounds of force, and are much smaller cross section than a bucket pin for an excavator. Why would violent movement hurt the hydraulics?
