I have been reading a lot about GC and just looked at it at autozone. Would it be too thick on my Sonata?? I have the 2.4 I4 the reccomeded wt is 5w20, 5w30, or 10w30 in the summer.
Is GC too thick for a 09 Hyundai Sonata??

Considering the excellent 0w-20 and 5W-20 options, I can find no compelling reason to use it over the thinner brews.
The 4 Cylinder Kia/Hyundai engines prefer a solid 30wt oil as opposed to the 20wt that the cap/manual reccomends. We are using a solid 30wt in my moms Kia. It's very quiet, mileage is excellent and the car runs great.
Check the technical manual's temperature/viscosity chart (Available at a dealer) and you will see what I mean.
The 20wt spec was nothing more than CAFE standards for this vehicle and so they "fit" with the crowd.

even in winter? We dont have harsh winters here. Hmm I was debating between castrol edge or GC maybe I will try the GC.
It is a 0w30 oil and you car is spec'd for 5w-20 to 10w30, why are you worried about using it? They say it is a better oil than the Castrol EDGE 5w30 and 10w30.

It would be fine, but check out my used oil analysis of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 and Mobil 0w-20 in the UAO section. My Sonata 2.4L loves the 0w-20.
I run a 0w30 oil year round. We have Sub Zero winters and very hot summers (not Texas/Arizona hot) but hot.

Keep in mind that Hyundai makes a few different 4-cylinder engines, and they do get updated once in a while.
For example, the Sonata 2.4L i4 engine was updated for 2009 model year.
Not only did it finally get VVT, but here is a spec from the Horse's mouth (or hmaservice web site):
2008 i4 Crankshaft bearing Oil clearance 0.026 ~ 0.048 mm
2009 i4 Crankshaft bearing Oil clearance 0.020 ~ 0.038 mm
I don't know if that makes any significant difference for the engine oil spec, but there it is.

I have worked/serviced all of the engines designs and hold technical manuals for most of them or have access to it from a local dealer and have perused through the pages.
It's old technology that they keep adding to but the basics are always the same and a 30wt isn't going to damage anything. Everyone is just a little too OCD here.
Trust me... I have been all over these engines and wouldn't recommend an oil weight that was going to cause a problem.

I would run a thin 5w30 or thick 5w20. How about Castrol Edge 5w30 isn't that thinner than most? Might be the best of both worlds for all year.

I wouldn't hesitate to use 5w30 in one either.
My point was that perhaps Hyundai made some changes that support the use of 5w-20.
No regular BITOGer doubts your Hyundai acumen.

I'm no Hyundai Expert... Just own a few and serviced quite a few. I just add my experiences... Don't think I'm the be all/end all. Just glad to help.
