Is -50F freeze protection too much antifreeze concentration?

Try the Northern Adirondacks, they've plenty of cold ass days up there. What's the reason just not to use 70/30? There's no harm, and the extra antifreeze may help boil over protection, and help the water pump.
Not sure where you are. I have property on Tupper Lake for about 12 years. Usually a week or 2 of -30F in winter. Similar to White Mrs NH where I love!!

Do you see much below -30F? If so to what degree?

I was out in Utica for a semester, they cancelled classes many times that semester due to cold weather. I recall there being 3-6 days with that the temperature went down below -20*, once down to -30*. Coldest I've ever been into in NY, haven't seen those temps since.

Tupper Lake huh? That's my go to camping spot, out on Horseshoe lake... I consider that my favorite place to camp.

I'm located in Clifton Park.. But I've been to tupper about 30 times, and know a few up there. I know how crazy cold it can get.

Yessa, that ain’t no Miami Beach up theya! With these Weatherspark graphs it’s possibe to have a 10 degree push outside normal data.

Even if -30 is possibly, if 60/40 will protect against freezing at -50, why put more strain on a water pump by putting it up to 70% coolant when that's not necessary anywhere but very close to the arctic circle.

Horseshoe is very nice. I think Cranberry is my favorite. I check the weather via Weather Channel APP. Watch it from late Jan to early Feb. Almost every winter you will see a -30 F. Not always but more than a few times it happened along with a similar temp at Crawford Notch NH. Not much to watch there but if you want to check out the weather the MT Washington Observatory is hard to beat.

If I wasn't such a sports freak and a partyr in HS and really paid attention!! I would have been a meteorologist! But I sure couldn't compete with the lovely Latina's on TelaMundo TV

the viscosity of the coolant goes up significantly below freezing with increased concentration. That could introduce more stress on the waterpump and whatever drives the pump. But doesn't matter if you won't see very low temperatures.
That’s conceptually true but I’d like to suggest it’s not worth worrying about. :)

Here is some data from Anton Paar and other sources. It’s based on Volkswagen VW G13 which I believe is Volkswagon’s Current spec. It’s a ethylene glycol based coolant with some additives. The Volkswagen Freeks might enjoy this. It can be mixed at 60/40 according to the literature.

Firstly, mm^2/ sec is identical to cSt. At minus 20 C, 50/50 is 26.4 cSt and at 60/40 it is 44.5 cSt. This is small change compared to motor oil at those temperatures. I have a water pump with 175,000 miles running fluid at 45 cSt 60/40). Make sure to look at the 60/40 graph and ignore the 40/60 portion of a cut off graph.
