Installing pushrods in their non-original lifter. Jeep 4.0

Recently acquired an XJ with a bad cylinder head. Dude took it apart and didn’t want to mess with it anymore so now it’s my project. He did not keep track of which pushrod went where so, if I just put them all in Willy nilly would it cause any issues? Are all pushrods the same length on the 4.0?

They are all the same no issue. You should try keep the lifters in the same hole but even mixing those would be ok.

I don’t think the lifters were removed. I still have to pull it to my house where I’ll dig in more but I know for sure the pushrods are in the drivers seat

I always put them back in the same place and used the same top and bottom position of the lifter.

If your back can handle it or you have help, attach the intake/exhaust on the bench and put it all on together.

Pushrods are cheap, they are probably worn anyway.

If the push rods are all out, set them next to each other and check their lengths. Inspect them to see and wear, and if they all look the same, throw them back in. When the vehicle was new, they weren't matched to the place they were installed in. If your gonna replace the lifters, as long as the pushrods aren't bent or damaged, I'd throw the old ones back in. If you buy new pushrods, you won't notice any performance difference. Just your wallet might feel a bit lighter.,,,

It's a Jeep 4.0. As long as they're all worn pretty similarly, the engine won't care if they aren't perfectly matched going back in.

That's the way to do it. I HATE doing jeep 4.0 manifolds. Last time I did a jeep 4.0 head gasket I said f- it and decided to just take the head off with intake and exhaust manifold still attached.
