Hello, I got a 77 IH Scout with a stock 345. I noticed I have a little bit of seeping from the front seal and rear seal. I'm Thinking I may give a high mileage oil a try. The owners manual calls for something around 0.1% of zinc. Does anybody have a recommendation? I normally run rotella in it. Leaning toward Mobil 1 10w40.

While some here dont like store brands, the Warren Performance Products made Super Tech High Mileage seems to be a good oil. Depending on which grade you use,the 10W-40 has arounf 910 ppm of zinc, really close to the .10 that you mention. It also has boron and moly. The Super Tech oil also seems to be a synthetic blend which helps in cold weather. The ST oils seem to be the same as or very close to Mag1 oil which is WPP'S own brand of oil. Mag1 10W-30 Mag1 10W-40

The Maxlife is close to $18 dollars for a 5qt. jug and close to $6 for a quart in my area. I have used the STHM and it seems to do fine.I cant see paying $18 or $6 for the Maxlife when ST most likely does as good.

autozone almost always has maxlife 5qrt jug with an oil filter of what ever brand they are pushing at the moment for $19.95

The t5 syn blend can be found in a 0w-40 as well

I think it's important to remember the most likely "why" for saying the .1% zinc: antiwear. There are lots of trace minerals that do well, such as moly. I wouldn't be too concerned with 1977 specs vs. today. As I recall, the 345 is a low compression, low stress, eternal life truck engine. People can get concerned about flat tappets but unless you've got a cam or high-pressure valve springs, it's a non-issue. Pennzoil traditionally has a lot of moly in it, and I suspect their HM does as well. I haven't tried ST. Mobil1 is pretty thin and may not give you the results. Then again it may be front and rear seal time after 25 years wink What kind of miles are on it?

Pardon my ignorance, but could you give some examples of oils that have conditioners vs oils that have seal swellers?

TBCH I used QS HM 10w30 and Pennzoil HM 10w30 both with a Pure1 filter, and both were good oils, at a 3500 OCI my engine became cleaner every time I used them And I started using QS HM 10w30 when it had Slick 50 added to it with no ill effects

Well I ended up going with Pennzoil HM. Went ahead and threw some Super Tech HM in the trans while I was at it. We'll see how it works eh?

The Pennzoil HM is absolutely loaded with moly, and the zinc isn't all that far below your owners manual spec. I think you're going to like it.

I've owned my '80 Firebird FORMULA 4.9L V8/4bbl since new. It has dripped oil(not much, just some) on the garage floor(pan under the car) for more years than I actually know. For many years when changing the oil/filter, I always just added 5 qts as the other 3 Firebirds/Camaros as well as all of the other American Iron that my wife and I have owned all took 5 qts. It wasn't until I decided to look into the OM for something else entirely that, I discovered that this engine only takes 4 qt of oil. I think I discovered this around 1984-85...Hmmmmm! I have been using MaxLife 5W30 for the last 3 OCI/yearly. The oil dripping has slowed down considerably in the last 3 OCI's that I've been using ML and, I haven't had to add oil at all during the summer months as with other dino oils(all held in high regard). I didn't notice any change when first using ML but now there is a considerable change. Prior to using any MaxLife oil, I changed out the valve cover gaskets(RTV). The internals were very clean. Although I only put on about 500-600 miles per summer(mostly short trips w/a bit of hiwy), I have always had to add about a 1/2 qt during that time. Now, the oil level stays at the full mark on the dipstick all summer long. The engine may have also been burning some oil that was unnoticable to the eye & nose because as I mentioned, there weren't that many oil spots on the driveway or garage floor. I am currently keeping this ML in the engine a little longer on this last OCI which was last done in OCT '10 prior to storing for the winter. From OCT-NOV 2010. I only drove the car 60 miles prior to storage. NOW, in May-Nov(summer 2011), I only drove the car an additional 400+ miles the whole summer of 2011. I'll do another OCI this coming summer 2012 when I bring out the car and there will still only be < 500 miles on this whole OCI. The oil has remained very clean during this OCI as each time I do and OCI, I often wonder why I'm changing the oil so soon. But, it is what it is! As mentioned, prior to ever using ML, I opened both of the valve covers to replace the RTV and to also help slow down the leaking. The internals are in perfect condition with only a hint of varnish. Keep in mind that when this car was built, the oil recomendation was for SE or SF motor oil. I have tried a few different oils over the years in this car, to say the least!...Syn, HDEO and now, HM's. The MaxLife seems to be working although slowly!

Mobil 1 HM oils are not thin for their respective grades.

Sweet, and old IH! I've loved those things ever since my dad had a couple when I was a kid. I had a 72 3/4ton pickup when I was a senior in highschool back in 99. Had no power anything, 4 wheel drum brakes, 304 with a two barrel, and had the 4spd. with the "granny" gear. Sadly, the syncro's were going out in the tranny and it was rusting away to nothing when I bought it, so I only drove it for about 1 1/2 years before it just sat and rotted away. We used to use PYB 20w50 in it. Sounds like a good candidate for the new Quaker State Defy oil. Hows the rust on yours?

It's not to bad. Replaced the floors in it two years ago. Working on getting the rest patched up. When I bought it the floors had a few bad areas. Both front fenders. 1 rear 1/4, and the pass side rocker. The bed seems to be the worst.
