Apparently my uncle was using it as some sort of drip pan wish I would have done a before/ after

in any event not sure it’s worth clean up further oiling and seasoning in this condition.

As found was coated in a bumpy hard tar like substance top and bottom soap, lye, even scraping did nadda.

Gave up threw it in the self clean oven, opened the windows, fans, greeted to rancid burning oil, soap and plastic stink, left a few hours place was clearing and
See picture :(

Looks mostly ruined, (photo is after tapping some scale off)

Nothing you can't fix with sandpaper. Seriously. Just sand the rust off with a fairly coarse grit of sandpaper on an orbital sander or even a flap disk on an angle grinder will be fine as long as you don't go too crazy. Wear some kind of face shield and mask though or you'll be smelling rust and pulling out brown/black boogers for a week.

Is there a brand name on the bottom? The sides are not that straight so probably an import pan. But they still work good if not cracked.

It used to be used over a campfire or grill and would return to said use

The handle reminds me of lodge

Yep Lodge , besides the powdery rust it’s not in terrible shape will be mildly irritating to clean up.

I would check out cast iron cookware sources for answers. There should be a brand name somewhere.

Don’t get drastic. You will ruin it.

His pan is in much worse shape than most pans that need to be redone. Steel wool is good but he has too much rust for that.
The wire wheel and vinegar will do a lot.
I don't think you need easy off( which is sodium hydroxide) as there is no grease build up or old seasoning to remove.

Seems like it needs a date with the glass bead blaster.

Funny that you bring this subject up. My wife just found her Grandmothers cast iron skillet and we used it last night for the first time to pan fry some crab cakes. Worked perfectly even after 35 years of sitting, just a quick cleanup and re-oil.
