I was browsing a couple of threads and someone mentioned the Toyota DS4 engine so naturally I had to look it up:

So the direct injector is self-cleaning and the port injection cleans the intake valves. Sounds like they've solved the teething problems with DI. And the V6 in the new Tacoma gets better MPG than the 4-cylinder in mine, too.

With my 2019 Tacoma with the V6, four-door 4WD SR5, long bed I get about 21mpg around town.
