I'm a complete moron. Switched up FP and LC.

Guess what has been running in my cars for the past 4 months? LC in my gas tank and FP in my crankcase. I have NO idea how I got them mixed up. When I originally received the FP and LC back in October, I poured the contents into individual 4oz bottles.

For some reason right from the beginning, I thought the FP was the yellow substance. So into the tanks it went on both the Taurus and 3i. Both cars have run great without any fuel related problems. I also put the red FP into the crankcase thinking it was really LC.

What do you guys think? Drain the oil? I use Shell gas exclusively so I'm thinking about running 2 tanks without any additive to flush out the LC in the tank.

Drain the oil right away - save a sample for a used oil analysis (in an extremely clean mason jar, for example). I'll bet your engine is pretty clean inside! (oil thinned a bit too)

It's been done before. How much FP in the crankcase?

6oz in the Taurus.

None in the 3i since I just did my first oil change on it yesterday (that's when I caught my mistake). I went to add the Red FP into the crankcase when the light went on in my head. Went back and double checked the bottles and let out a banshee scream.

Heck with the cold temps lately, the FP in the oil may have helped...I'm sort of joking but it may be true. It depends on what (if any) chemical reactions FP and motor oil has as well as reactions with FP and engine seals. The LC in fuel is probably not a big worry. It's probably wise to dump the oil and replace with inexpensive motor oil as a flush.

Not to worry. If the FP does some cleaning, we all may want to do it. As for the fuel, people put transmission fluid, MMO and other oily stuff in the fuel tank, so LC probably no worse.

Wouldn't the FP flash off fairly quickly? I would change the oil but I doubt you have damaged your engine. Your addpack has probably been beaten down by the FP60.

The LC20 in the tank wouldn't worry me at all. I wouldn't make it a practice, but as TallPaul said, people have been putting in ATF in larger doses for a long time without issues. Probably not the best thing for your cat, but it's the FP60 that concerns me more.

I don't have a problem with making the mistake, stuff like that happens.

In BITOG posts past I have seen a number of LC20 in the gas posts but I think this is the first FP60 in the crankcase I have seen.

I doubt it you have done any harm but I would change the oil anyhow.

I must confess I put FP in the crankcase of my motorcycle once. Fortunately, it was just the 1oz booster at a 1,000 mile interval. Terry interpreted the results from that OCI and saw no harm from it. The shifting action did get a bit worse for a few hundred miles, but then it got better again. That's about the only thing I noticed.

Epilogue:

Last month my 5 year Extended Warranty was about to run out on my Taurus. I noticed an oil leak underneath on the pan so I took it in to the dealer to get fixed under the warranty. They ended up replacing the oil pan gasket (common on the Taurus), the timing cover gasket, and both valve cover gaskets (all under warranty).

Was it related to the FP60 in the crankcase? Your guess is as good as mine.
