So as you can probably see I work for A large atou parts chain. I have been lurking on this board for over a year and find it very usefull for giving all the oil recomendations I recieve questions about. Well today Ignoramous was standing in front of me while I was standing at my highly polished shrine(the oil diplay wich I take great pride in} and said hey dude can I ask you a question? I thought here we go, took a deep breath and said sure. He said do you have any oil that will make my car quit Knocking? I just looked at him until he said( i didn't change my oil for 13,000 miles in my 2002 mazda protege and now It Knocks. I reply smart move. He says ya it has never caused a problem before this time, I humor myself and ask what kind of oil it was? he replied walmart oil change bu this time he took it to tires plus and they recomended Lucas so he added TWO bottles! I live in nebraska were it is currently 5 degrees out I told him I really dont Know anything about oil I just started working here (7yrs ago) and to go ask someone at the counter. we all got to listen to the abuse story before telling him a replacement engine was going to cost 3200.00 and the original only had 44,000 miles what a shame. this how about 50% of the public care for their car. could buy alot of oil for $3200.00!

I bet you hear more than you can bare sometimes. BTW I like Autozone better than Advance. But the other day I was going to buy some Castrol GC (at Autozone) and the bottle seemed a bit dusty. The oil was CF-2 SJ

. Some unsuspecting sucker probably bought it.

"Take two reman engines and call me in the morning." Wow. Looks like the gene pool needs some chlorine. From one (ex) parts guy to another, I hear and feel your pain.

I'm relieved to hear that you didn't recommend that he purchase GC for his dying car. I'd hate the thought of any quantity of my revered greenish oil being subjected to such a fate. . .

On a somewhat more serious note, perhaps you shouldn't be so hard on this guy. He, and legions like him, do much to keep you gainfully employed.

I have heard some similar and worst stories from my spouse, friewnds and family who have worked at dealers and parts stores.. I like depriciated vehicles but stories like that make me very scared of used cars!!

This weekend I am helping a friend of mine put rod and main bearings and a high volume oil pump in a '94 4.0 Cherokee with about 175k miles on it. I'm hoping it will make that blasted oil light go out. 10k-15k OCIs on cheap dino will kill the most rugged of engines. He's been driving it for a while like this, so even if it didn't need bearings, it does now. Hopefully the crank isn't too torn up.

I need to plan an intervention to prevent a similar fate from befalling his wife's mint '00 outback.

Killing a 4.0/4.2 bottom end is nearly impossible. You can gum the lifters up ..you can have blowby out the yazoo ..but to kill the bearings you have to really try at it.

Naturally ..your pal will say it was no effort at all.

Yup...much of the public is this way. Used to work with someone (female) that mentioned they were going to trade their nice looking Camry...hey I might buy it and give you more than the "real" trade value. Upon questioning they had forgot to change the oil for the last 10K miles or so...nope not interested go trade it. This was 15 years ago when oils weren't as good.

I often notice a certain lower income "group" around here frequently is driving late model econo cars that smoke like a burning tire. WTH ? Do these people never change their oil or what, resulting in bad motors.

The fact remains that most amaricans do not view an automobile as something requiring regular maintenance. To them a car is something that, I guess because of how much they cost, should run no matter what. The fact remains that as long as an engine is properly maintained, that includes the proper oil change intervals for the car and oil combo, and not run really hard it can last twice to three times as long as most poeple think.

Nothing to worry about in this case. According to the owner of the Mazda, the engine knocks. You'd figure that out (unless you can't hear) before opening your wallet. But this doesn't help for all those cases where the engine is about to start knocking...

Working in the service stations I saw:

* A guy fill his sump so that it was less than an inch from the filler cap.

* A girl open the "radiator cap", fill it with water, then (sensibly) talked to the mechanic on why the water went "black and scungy".

*A guy pump up his tyres until no more air would flow in...looked like a matchbox car...perfectly round tyres...I was scared getting the air out.

* A girl abuse me when I asked if she was using antifreeze (-5C) and the car was boiling...next day she apologised for calling me a f.....g imbecile.

* A guy use a BIC lighter end on to hold the petrol pump handle on the "flow" position.

* My sister in law congratulate herself at our dinner table for paying attention to the gauges "The temperature one went up past the red...I drove it for a little while, and it looked like it was coming down. I drove it home and it didn't move...not even of that needle thing and into the blue.

* My sister in law complaining that she had to drive homw in "2" because in "D" it would stall. Could see fumes coming out of the radiator cap due to the head cracks.

* Brother in law driving 50km with a siezed water pump (that he'd promised to replace.

* Father in law being ****** at me because chemiweld would not fix the damaged head after he drove 20km with no water.

* Brother in law surprised that his Suzuki used exacltly the same amount of oil driving home as it did driving to my place...all of it. Was too busy in traffic to notice the orange light...siezed.

(I could go on, but you get the gist)

Some early Renaults had the gas tank fill spout inside the engine compartment (brilliant). It wasn't unheard of for a gas station attendant to take off the oil fill cap and fill the engine with gas.

Talk about flushing out your engine

Wow, Shannow, your "sister-in-law," "sister-in-law," "father-in-law," "brother-in-law"...did you think to do a genetic check-up before you married into this family?

jbas,
they spread across both sides...brother's wife, Better half's brothers etc.

The btter half is pretty good with cars. Will tell me if she's heard a new squeak, or felt a new shudder.

(I've still got a lot of Brother in law stories...the seized water pump would take a page 'though")

Shannow:
Sit your family down and explain to them what an idiot light is, it has this name for a reason. I have had to do this with in-laws already and saved their cars as a result.

I think my friend has already resigned himself to hour upon hour of subtle humiliation from me regarding his poor maintenance while we do this job. I think the strategy I'm going to take is "Fine do 10k OCIs, but use a group IV oil".

I come from a family where everyone knows how to turn wrenches. I did my first timing chain job with my mom when I was 9. This kind of behavior is very foreign to me.

With my ex-inlaws, I just sat with a blank stare and mentally smiled. Silence is golden...

You can get interesting results when you explain an idiot light.

I've had a couple of technically illiterate but otherwise intelligent people tell me that I couldn't be right because car manufacturers wouldn't do something like that.
