If M1 T&SUV is better than the PAO M1 products and costs about the same then

Why doesn't Mobil just use this formulation throughout the M1 line? Their 0W-30 and 5W-30 and 10W-30 would then be ACEA A3/B3/B4 rated. And have they changed the formulation of M1 SS w/ the introduction of extended performance? Is M1 EP "extended performance" on BITOG?

The tradeoff of going to an A3 rating is that they likely won't be able to make ILSAC GF-4 because it won't meet the "Energy Conserving" spec. Far more cars sold in the US come with a manufacturer's recommendation for GF-4 (the starburst) than for ACEA A3.

Yes, but many oils are still ILSAC GF-3, right? Would that matter even in their lower viscosities, such as 0W-30 and 5W-30. That way these oils could meet the more grueling european specs and have higher HTHS. Audi, I believe, requires a minimum HTHS of 3.5 now.

GF-4 is being phased in, while GF-3 is being phased out. After some time, the starburst will only be licensed for GF-4. Besides - I don't think an A3 oil would have met GF-3.

Pennzoil is the closest to this, with a separate Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 "Euro" to go with their GF-4 "Platinum" 5W-30.

Would the additive package of M1 T&S be stronger than, say, GC in the sense that it is made for hard working diesels and therefore needs a stronger additive/detergentdispersant formula?

Yes, Delvac 1 has a more robust additive package than most of the gas engine synthetics. Amsoil and Redline are probably the two exceptions to this and they are priced even higher than Delvac 1....

There is obviously a fine library of VOA's and UOA's on this web site. A search will allow a more technical comparison. However, most cars have no need for the soot fighting formulation that the Delvac One aka Mobil One Truck and SUV has. As you know, and has been previously mentioned, either of these started life off as a formulation for diesel motors.

In my mind, either of these is probably the most bullet proof and robust in the Mobil One line! There are three impediments to its over all use across vehicles (i.e., mine that is):

1. does it meet the gross AND more importantly the designer specifications, du jour?

2. higher price (1 dollar per quart)

3. Can/do you want to use 5w40 viscosity? (this can be quite oxymoronic in that American cars such as Honda Ford are gravitating to the 5w20 viscosity)

I have been using it in a TDI application ever since the first oem recommended oil change at 5,000 miles. The 5w40 visosity has ben demostrated probably the best viscosity for the design of the TDI motor. So I have 5k,10k,15k OCI's. I am currently working on 25k OCI's.

Mobil One already competes in the European arena. Just pull down the Mobil One European specifications off the web. But I think one should keep in mind that European specified motor oils cost 10-15 US in Europe. There is already pretty heavy resistance (even by folks like me, who like this oil) at 5 dollars per quart. On a sale or coupon day one can get it at 3.99 per quart.

M1 T&S has more than just better soot handling, as the anti-wear levels are similar to what Mobil put in the PCMO 'racing oil'. There are accounts of people having wear/scoring problems with M1 5w30 PCMO and fixing it with M1 T&S, people having parts self destruct on their drag bikes, and wear out when switching to M1 T&S, etc.

Better soot handling doesn't make for such a dramatic difference in wear protection.
