Ok, I cant decide if I want to take the plunge and go with a synthetic in my Honda Ridgeline or stick with dino. Its a 2006 and has 62,000 miles, I follow the MM and it ususlly goes to about 7100-7500 miles for an oci. 80% highway miles at 60 mph and the other 10% is city driving on the weekends. I have considered all different kinds and weights, but I'm gonna stick with the 5w20 it recommends. My dino choices are Castrol, PYB, and VWB. My synthetic choices are Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, or Valvoline Synpower. The main thing I undecided is on to syntheic or not, I need some expert opinions.

Why not take a stroll down to the product rebates, sales, promotions section. Often you can get synthetic for less than conventional after rebate, which makes the decision pretty easy.

I believe that if you are using a 5W20 as a minimum it is already a semi synthetic, no pure dino 5W20 that I am aware of? could be wrong though

The choice is easy... it's either yes or no.

All joking aside, just stick to what you've been doing. It seems as if you're comfortable with your current oil change regimen, why change for change's sake?

It don't take an expert to say w/the synthetics mentioned will enable 10,000mi OCI's. M1 EP or PU I would like better and stick with the 5/20 wt as recommened.

As long as you stick with your vehicle's OLM, do not waste your money on synthetic. I would use a regular 5W20 as long as the vehicle is in warranty, and then I might consider using a synthetic and extending the OCI.

Those aren't "real" expensive oils like the real extended drain synthetics are.I'd use any of them quicker then I'd use old group two Dion stuff. That shouldn't be a hard decision.I don't use what your using now in my lawnmower.

Assuming you change your oil about twice per year and the sump holds about 5 quarts and the diff. between dino and synthetic is about $3/qt., the cost difference is:

2 x 5 x $3 = $30/year

Is it really worth it to push dino to 7k miles just to save $30 a year on a 2006 truck? You could run synthetic for the next ten years and the difference would only be $300 over 10 years.

Well, I think I have decided to go with a synthetic based on what I have read so far. I am just skeptical about pushing a dino to 7500, even if many here swear dinos are good for it. I paid a lot of money to have a truck this nice and I shouldnt try to nickle and dime it on oil. Synthetics are not that more expensive and I change it myself anyway so the labor is the same.

I agree. All my synthetic oils were bought with sale+rebate, the average price per quart is less than $1.50 (tax included).

Wow....where do you find your coupons and rebates? I suck at it.

Synthetics for me.....

For the minimal cost margin, why not use syn?
You can often find great deals on syn.
For example, last summer you could have had M1 AFE for $12.00/jug after MIR. You could get two with the rebate.
You could have had PP for $5.00 after MIR. You could get two as gift cars for Wally, and one as a check from SOPUS.
You could later get M1 EP for $3.00/qt after rebate, ten quarts total allowed.
I see you live in Ohio.
Meijer had PP on clearance for as little as $1.49/qt, although it was 5W or 10W-30, which would be fine for you Honda.
You paid a good buck for your Ridgeline.
You shoudn't worry too much about the price of the oil you put in it.

About 2-3 years ago I got paid to use Synpower. The sale price was $3.49/qt with 2 rebates: $15 rebate from Kragen and $10 rebate from Valvoline each case of 6 quarts with limit of 2 cases. After tax and stamps I pocketed $2/case, I bought 6 cases and it costs me a minus $12.

As fdcg27 said, watch out for sale/rebate by visiting the sub-forum "rebates, sales and promotions".
