qantas increasing "fuel surcharge" for overseas travel.

$Oz is heigher than it's been since it was floated. Oil's not as bad as it's been recently.

Qantas applied for the ability to introduce a "fuel surcharge" at the worst of it, and is now increasing the surcharge ($145Oz fuel surcharge for a U.S. flight).

Interesting part of the article was that
Quote:

Qantas raised the surcharge for tickets issued from Aug. 9, following a similar move by Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI: Quote, Profile, Research) last week, after jet fuel prices spiked to almost US$90 a barrel.

Makes jet fuel 66c/litre
Petrol $1.25/litre.
Diesel $1.30/litre.

More subsidies for big Bizzness.

You really can't blame them. It's just a way of raising prices in a way that less astute people might not factor into their decision-making process.

They need to charge by the kg, for the total of luggage and passenger weight.

Does anyone know the %age of drag caused by lift, for a typical passenger jet?

I'm still miffed that the airlines are bleating about the price of fuel when it's half what we are paying for fuel for our vehicles.

Also, the Oz dollar is WAY up on where it was when the surcharge was approved, while their fuel is bought in $US.
