My Nissan Sentra was burning a little oil (1/4-1/2 quart every 5000 miles) so I've been experimenting with different oils to try to eliminate adding oil between changes (one of my pet peeves!) without jumping to a 10W40 or so. I've tried Mobil 1 5W30 and 10W30 and Pennzoil 5W30 and 10W30. A few months ago I bought 8 cases of Quaker State High Mileage SL 5W30 for $1/quart that Walmart wanted to get rid of. Ever since my Sentra is not buring oil and I'm impressed with the oil. My stash will last me another 70K miles before I need to buy oil again!

I'm sold on the high mileage oils, its not all marketing.

Using 1/4 to 1/2 qt at 5K on an engine with 70K is considered fine & needs no doctoring. You rolled 8 cases of dice & won so far. Now hopefully, no drips develop using high mileage oil continuously for roughly the next seven oil changes.

Glad it is working out for you. My 93 Sentra with 173,000 miles uses about 1/2 quart per 3,000. I will give it that.

Many people would be elated to only use 1/2 quart per 5,000.

I admit that 1/2 quart over 5000 miles is nothing to complain about. The reason I wanted to try to eliminate the consumption is because the Sentra has a 2-7/8 quart sump capacity. Being a 1/2 quart low is down toward the lower end of "cross-hatched" area and I don't like to run the car low on oil considering the sump size is so small to begin with.

BTW Triple Se7en, I run the same risk of an oil leak using Pennzoil 10W30 or QS HM 5W30. The main difference with a 5W30 HM oil is that it is blended to be a high 30 wt. oil with esters to swell rings and seals. If anything, leaks if they were present, could possibly disappear.

A sump capacity of 2-7/8 quarts! That's a quart less than the sump capacity of my motorcycle.
