I caved in to the Autozone/Castrol GTX deal. Got 20 quarts 5W-20 and 4 Motorcraft FL-400's for my Ford Freestar grocery getter. I went there intending to buy Quaker State but no 5W-20.......

I made the choice just to pay the extra $2 for the GTX and a Bosch filter after trying to decide myself.

I prefer any SOPUS product (Shell-Pennzoil-Quaker State) over Castrol.

No kidding!

its kind of like import cars vs domestics
shell, pennzoil, qs.
vs m1. Valvoline,castrol ect...

i personally like castrol gxe. and would probably run that as a conventional oil

The competition between Pennzoil and Quaker State (both SOPUS owned) has produced some very fine conventional oils. I too would prefer a SOPUS product over the GTX if I were choosing between them. SOPUS has really made the difference in Quaker State oils.
Castrol has lost numerous bulk accounts due to the aggressive marketing and performance of Quaker State oils. Quaker State will pick up the tab on any engine that has been serviced at manufacterer intervals if it has an oil-related problem for 250K. Many shops(including new car dealers) have signed on since SOPUS has been at the helm of QS. If I ran conventional oil i'd use it in with complete confidence.

While I agree that Castrol's marketing is beyond anything with facts, I'd guess you will not be buying any Mobil products, Pennzoil/ Quaker State or Valvoline (their future ads are up there).

So that leaves what oil brand that does not put up some DUMB marketing?

Motorcraft?

Take care, Bill

PS: GTX gave me an very impressive UOA with a high TBN after 5,800 miles of all cold weather use. I can not ignore that even with their marketing. (though I have NOT bought any more Castrol for over a year now.. So maybe their marketing is working)

While all the companies put out ridiculous advertising, Castrol takes the cake as the most outrageous to date.
