Wizz Air Ltd., a low-cost airline with bases in Hungary and Poland, will spend $1.5 billion to buy as many as 24 new airplanes from Airbus in the next five years, Chief Executive Officer Jozsef Varadi said.
"We started negotiations with Airbus three to four months ago," Varadi said in an interview yesterday.
Wizz Air will buy 12 180- seat Airbuses to be delivered between 2007 and 2008, with the option to buy 12 more between 2008 and 2010, Varadi said.
Wizz Air and a few other low-cost airlines began operating after last year's European Union expansion, which liberalized airspace, eliminated restrictions and rules that favored national carriers and attracted no-frills airlines including Ryanair Holdings and EasyJet.
Varadi said Wizz Air will add two Airbuses to its fleet in December and one more next year, which will give the airline nine aircraft.
Wizz Air will start flights to Bulgaria's capital city, Sofia, in September and Kaunas, Lithuania, on Dec. 1.
