Is there a free software to find which proccess consumes most CPU with windows XP ? Lately my CPU is at 100% for long time while I don't run anything other than a couple firefox windows and a MS word window. The memory usage is usually at 800-900 MB and I have 2 GB rams.

Use the CTRL-ALT-DEL buttons all together, that opens the Windows Task Manager-you'll find a Microsoft peach called "wuauclt.exe" that is probably sucking up all your CPU and memory. Turn off automatic Windows Update and you'll (likely) fix your problem. Worked on my old laptop, it was worse than most viruses!

Mouse to the taskbar, right-click, and select "Task Manager" from the pop-up menu. Select the "processes" tab and sort by CPU usage.

Yeah, if it's Windows Updater... that was one of the biggest things which pushed me out the window and into Macintosh. It drove me batty... very frequent updates which left the machine almost unusable while it was updating. Apple also sends updates, but I don't even notice that it's running.

The Windows XP Task Manager does not sort processes by CPU usage, it shows Memory Usage only. I turned off windows updater, the CPU usage is down to less than 10%.

Sure it does. Click on the CPU column to sort by CPU usage. If you don't see it in your view currently, you may have to go into View and then Select Columns... to choose the CPU usage column.

Thanks. It works.

To get more info than Task Manager, you can also use Process Explorer, available for free from sysinternals. Very useful for diagnosing what's going on under the hood!
