My 98 Toyota Camry has been in 3 accidents, insurance involved in 1 of them (I repaired the car on my own the other times) and the title is clean. I'm sure the accidental might show up on record though.
Yep, a dirty title is a good indicator that something major happened, but vehicles with "clean" titles are not necessarily clean. I wrecked my truck pretty bad almost a year ago...did an estimated $10,000 in damage to landscaping. The police did a report, but didn't cite me with anything. The property owner never filed an insurance claim, and I only have liability, so no claim for the truck either. A CarFax would not reveal it (not a DMV issue, no insurance involved), and the truck has always been registered and passed every state inspection.
So this has a clean title to this day and is driven daily (not in this condition anymore)...
