You laugh. There's a guy over on one of the 350Z boards who has concluded that the Nissan VQ35 is so solid . . .

Solid my ***. That VQ35 uses toothpicks for connecting rods, the way they snap with the slightest engine modification. The performance aftermarket is making a fortune selling replacement rods for this engine.

That guy obviously needs to learn the hard way.

They expressed concern that while new BMW engines running BMW spec 5W-30 by the monitoring system will have no problem reaching 100K in good shape....they are not comfortable that these engines will reach 300K like many of the engines they service that are changed at shorter intervals using the same oil.

I think this is where the real argument is. Following the minimum maintenence recommendatioins by the mfg are just that, the minimum to keep your car going for the avg life they expect you to keep it.

I tend to keep my cars for many years, and i would have a hard time letting my oil (be it synthetic or not) go past 5,000 mile intervals.

My previous car, a 1989 VW Jetta got it's oil changed every 3K miles or less. I sold it in perfect running condition, never having any engine or tranny work done, and it had 225,000 miles on it.

My new car now has 46,000 miles on it and it has yet to see 3,500 miles on the same oil
