How much leave do you get in U.S/Canada?

The current corporate fad is to call it PTO for "Personal Time Off". (I swear, all these corporate types go to a secret meeting every year and agree on this stuff) This includes all your vacation days, sick days, I just can't deal with all the bovine-menure today days. Basic starting is 120 hrs. Increases with the amount of time your "a faithful employee". And that's the beauty of this design. Keep rightsizing every year, eventually most employees get recirculated and start at the basic 120 hrs.

Then if your lucky, you'll get 8 National Holidays. Although that's less universal. In my job, you get the National Holiday, unless of course, you scheduled to work.

Most folks get 2 weeks vacation after 1 or 2 years of service and 3 weeks after 5 to 7 years.

Add to this the 8 to 10 holidays and the "normal" 5 to 8 sick days.

What is the "norm" up north?
 
My time off corresponds with what Ugly3 wrote: 2 weeks (80 working hours) per year after 1 year, then 3 weeks (120 working hours) after 5 years. I have 7 years with the company now.

There's also unlimited sick time, within reason.
 
Where I work, we get 2 weeks vacation (75 hours) during the first two years, then we get 3 weeks per year after that. We get 11 Stat Holidays and 12 'sick' days during each year.
 
I work for state government (not the federal government) and we get an obscene amount of time off.

I get 37.5 hours of “personal” time off PLUS 60 hours of sick time PLUS an additional 3.75 hours every other week in “annual” leave (97.5 annually). When I passed 5 years of service, this increased to 5.45 hours every other week (141.7 annually).

Oh, and we get around 12 holidays each year as well.

In the US we don't nearly get as much time off as in Europe, but closer to Asia (but they still get more Holidays than USA).

In the USA as Bror pointed out there is HUGE disparity between the public and private sector. The others pretty much nailed summary in the USA. I do like the progressive companies that reward you for not using sick time.

I have the standard - starting with a couple weeks for the first year ...blah...blah...blah...and then you quit before 4 weeks off at 10 years of employment........
 
My time off is unlimited since I'm retired. When I was working it was 2 weeks for the first 5 years, then 3 qeeks until 15 years, then 4 weeks until 25 then 5 weeks (not a lot of people make it to that ctagory), Plus the norml national holidays, about 10 per year. Sick time was as required and was essentially unimited but had to be justified.

I the last couple of decades few people work very many years at one job, so most people in the country don't get beyond 3 weeks, many never get beyond 2 weeks.

There is also a good percentage of people in the US working in jobs with no paid time off.
 
Ya.... it's kinda weird here. I have worked for my employer for 26 years and because I've been there so long I am allowed to accure a maximum of 300 hours of PTO ... ( my company in the private sector calls if Paid Time Off but the effect is the same).The real rub is that in my position there is only 2 other people who can step in to cover for me...and they are busier than bird dogs with fleas..... Since Jan 1 2004 I have taken 4 days off.I currently have 276 hours of PTO available to me and cant find the time to use it.If I take a week off I'm 3 weeks just getting caught up.I've never taken 2 weeks in a row before.... Even tho i'm allowed to....

At my seniority I " Accure " 7.9 hours of PTO with every 2 week pay check.If I reach my maximum of 300 hours , I dont lose any of my accured PTO but they stop giving me anymore PTO... So in a way I sort of have to take at least a day off at that time.Once I'm under that threshold I begine to accure PTO at the same 7.9 hours per pay peroid.
 
I get as much time off as I want as long as the work gets done. I often work 4 days a week or come into the office half days to avoid traffic. They know if they give me too much static I'll just work for the competition.
 
6 paid holidays per year.
2 weeks paid vacation per year.
The rest of the year I work 50-80 hours a week.
Kinda sucks, but beats holding the "will work for food" sign at the streetcorner.
God bless the American working man. It seems we bust it a little harder than the rest of the world.

I work for the State of California. I receive:

8 hrs./mo. Sick Leave
10 hrs./mo. Vacation Leave
13 State Holidays/yr.
1 personal day/yr.

I work a 9/80 schedule (means longer days and every other Monday off)
I can keep up to 640 hours of vacation leave on the books before we are hassled to take time off. I can accumulate as much sick leave as I want/can. Upon termination, the state must pay me for my vacation hours, but not the sick leave. Upon retirement, a portion of unused sick leave is used to give me service credit for our retirement pension formula.

I think a generous vacation/leave program should be the norm, not the exception. We would all be a bit healthier.
 
My old job:

3 days - 6 months
3 days = 6 months to 1 year
5 days = 1-2 years
10 days -2-5 years
15 day = 5-12 years
20 days - 12 on

11 paid holidays

NO SICK TIME

New job
6.66 hours per month after probation (90 days)
80 pto starting at the first aniversery
120 after 7 years

I believe that's where it peaks out.

Sick time is part of your PTO

My wife

28 vaction/holidays
8 sick days (can accumulate up to 30 and can "sell back" excess at a rate of 1/2 time)
 
2.5 days a month for a total of 30 days a year......paid! When placed on quarters, the time used does not count against your leave. As of this minute, I have 2 whole months of paid leave! I am in the military though.......which has the best leave benefits......period.
