How Much Does an Oil Change Cost?

As DNewton is fond of pointing out, there is no such thing as a totally "true synthetic" off the shelf motor oil. All of them are a mix of "true" synthetic with some Group III or Group II in the mix to varying percentages. Or a straight Group III.

Only a few folks seem to be worked up by that. Modern Group III comes darn close to Group IV performance and even has some characteristics that are better than Group IV. The average auto owner would see no difference between them and the result in their engine.

It is legal and not false advertising to label Group III as synthetic. All the legal hurdles were scaled many years ago. Only the purists hang on.
It's like being a little bit pregnant. Semantics of advertising based on capitalism.

$20-35 here, depending on if it's the new car which Walmart doesn't sell cheap 0W16 for or the older ones.

I did catch the Mobil rebate but that's only good for 2 oil changes, and I'm not driving all over heck to look for cheap oil, not if it's a gallon of gas to get there and a gallon back--let alone more.

Same here, mine are $35 at most. 6qt case of M1 from Costco for $22-27, bought a case of YZZD3 Toyota filters that came out to $4 ea. 5.5qts on the change & add the remaining half qt around 2500mi.

A little less for gf's '19 Civic. 3.7qt pan IIRC, A02 filter that was about $5 (also purchased a case). Also get the oil at Costco when it's on sale. Both cars are simple & can be done in 30mins if needed.

Usually put the car on ramps & drain oil. Go for a run. Wipe off drain plug & reinstall. Loosen filter, stretch, install new filter, add oil, clean up & good for about 6 months 😎

Nice. I try to do a tire rotation at the same time, but usually just wait a few minutes for oil to stop draining "enough" and then I call it done.

Pre-pandemic I was one and sometimes 2 oil changes a month. Now it's every other month. Not sure what post-pandemic will bring. Other than a desire to obtain vehicles that take the same filter... for a while each one was a different filter! was nice to find two could use the same.

But then you have to use your time to drive to the lube change joint, sit around and wait for them to get it done, and then drive back home. That takes more time out of your day than walking outside and doing it yourself.

Maybe it's just me,that I truly detest hanging around a shop waiting around. I'm just a very impatient person I guess haha.

100%...

I can't sit and wait for those people.... I usually drain my oil while I'm doing laundry (yep, bachelor here).

It takes literally 2 minutes to drive up the ramps and pull the plug.... if that.
I come back 20 minutes later and it's another 5 minutes to finish the job.

My 2021 f150 xlt 302a screw 5.0
“8” qts chevron 5w30 semi synthetic & cos10575 champion filter. About $12.50
My 2018 Ford Explorer 6 qts RGT 5w20 & cos10575 champion oil filter $1.79.

Wish I had bought more than 10 of the cos10575 when they were less than a dollar. Shipping was $10 for 10 filters. At the time I only had the explorer that used them so 10 seemed like plenty.

As for tools ramps drain pans most of those items have been bought and paid for 20 plus years ago and I used many of the items professionally for nearly a decade.

My Honda dealer's standard prices are $49.95 conventional, $69.95 synthetic, pre-tax.

During 2020, they went up to $79.95 synthetic (probably quickly realized that was bad for business).

Pre-tax, Kirkland 5qt = $14.99. (Castrol Edge on rollback for $23.xx). Really nice filter: $9 - $13. Washer: can't remember, I'll overestimate and say $1.

Amortizing the ramp/jack stand costs/jack?....let's say $5. Tools: sunk cost, excluding the breaker bar.

But the tools, ramps, jacks, jack stands, Mityvac....they all pay for themselves quickly when you do transmission or rear diff. changes.

Dealers charge insane prices for those.
