Hey,

I've got Mobile S 10w/40 (not mobile 1, this is the part-synthtic oil) in my 1999 Sti (turbo)

I was wondering how many km's i should run using this oil?

What would be a safe distance? 3000miles, 4000miles, 5000miles.

thanks

How come not M1 for your car? Its an WRX STi!!!!!!

He man,

Mobile 1 only come in 5/50, 0/40 and 10/30.

10/30 (which cost $90) is the closest that come to my needs, but i prefer 10/40 coz of the summer heat. i have heard lots of wrx's have spun a bearing with too light oil.

and the only Mobile that comes in 10/40 is Mobile S.

i may go with Amsoil 10/40 Full Synthetic soon. but for $90 i'm not sure as i dont really want to run 10,000kms on that, even though it may be able to handle it.

i'd rather go cheaper mobile S ($32) and change a bit earlier.

what you think?

Nah man. Use the Mobil 1 Supersyn 0W-40. You wont find it in the supermarket! Its a 'specialist product' and Mobil limit the number of places you can buy it from. Give a Mobil distributor a call. Look in the YP... Be prepared for a shock tho. Its ~$100 a bottle?

The WRXs that have had bearing failure were the heavily modified ones running at very high speeds (We're talking >200kmh for quite a bit of time!). The oil would turn to water (ie no viscocity) and main bearing #3 is the first to loose pressure from memory cos its shared with the turbo feed.

I dont recommend running Mobil S in your STi, no matter what the OCI lengths are. Thats an expensive car with a very fine engine you got there, so dont cheap out on some sub par oil!!

You can Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 if you drive your car sensibly. Its about $50/5L from memory, very good value for money, although it is only a Grp III oil. (Still worlds better than the stuff you are using right now). Screw Castrol and their overpriced junk. Their 0W-40 is no better than Shells at almost double the price. I would recommend Motul 300V 10W-40 if you use your car on the track etc...

I suggest you keep your current oil in there for maybe 5000ks max, and then get rid of it.

You spent the money for an Sti but want to skimp on the oil?? An ordinary WRX should have syn for the turbo bearings, an Sti it's absolutely a no-brainer. What am I missing here?

Leo the Helix ultra is still the worst performing 'syn' for anti-wear we have tested so far, BP Visco 5000 eats it! The Castrol Formula R 0W40 is much better (PAO) than the Helix but not the best by far. Ron just Timkened the Castrol Formula R 5W30 (hydrocracked) this weekend and it's pretty decent which is a surprise. Still the biggest surprise of his testing was how good Pennzoils 15W40 Gas (not gasoline) oil is in SJ/CH-4 Purebase variety.

Yeah Delvac 1 from memory was only like
And sprintman, surely the Helix Ultra isnt that bad? Its got all sorts of certifications like BMW LL, etc... XHVI base oil... Cmon its better than any semi-synth for sure. I'd still use it if I wanted to save a bit of money...

I agree with Sprintman, use a synthetic in that turbo engine for sure! My vote would go for Redline 5w40. Costly for you guys perhaps, but you could go to 10,000km intervals (or maybe even 15,000km with UOA) to ease the overall cost.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Patman you got it in one! RL 5W40 would be my choice. Obviously not an Sti that's will be driven hard or a keeper. I'm continually dumbfounded what people do with great cars and an Sti is a great car and a sheetload of money here. Geez I wouldn't use Synth S in my 89 Mazda turbo!

RL 5W40 isnt available here unfortunately and its given some pretty nice UOAs.

I wonder whether subaru even use fully synth oil as part of the service?

ok ok thanks for the flaming... i'll use amsoil 10/40 from the next change onwards

and YES to the yanks who keep on asking... the good oil over here is around $90 AUD to $130 AUD (thats $40 USD to $60USD) for full synthetic ~ Amsoil, M1, Redline.
