How Long is Your Change Interval?

My first sample back from Hewitt/CAT said to go longer with my intervals. However, they did not specify how long. My sample had 5000km.

I'm hoping to be able to do 9k (15,000km) intervals with Schaeffers once I start using it. I'm gonna ease into it slowly though, with the first interval at 6000km (3700mi) then 8000 to 10,000km (5-6k) and then we'll see how the analysis results look at that point and see if I want to push it further. I'm confident that Schaeffers can handle it, but it's always good to double check just to be sure my engine is sound enough. An older engine (mine has 70k) can't always do as long an interval, although mine has just been cleaned with Auto-rx so it's probably good to go.

I'm a long time 3000 miler; I'll have my first oil analysis ever, done on my first fill of Schaeffer's, probably next week sometime at ~3000 miles. Hope to be able to extend to at least 4000, 5000 would be nice.

The last oil change in my F150 was over 10,000 miles. That was in the coarse of 18 months and only 1 filter change. The only reason I changed it was becuase I put on a by-pass filter system and wanted to start fresh.

BTW I was using Amsoil Series 2000 0w30. That was in El Paso TX, where temps routinely reach 100+ degrees.

I'll be getting my latest oil analysis back, then I'll get a copy, it will have my last 3 analysis.
1 castrol syntec change (2100 miles0
1 Amsoil change (10,000 miles)
1 current Amsoil(just a check and no change(10,000 miles)

MY VW Jetta TDI, specifies an oil change interval of 1 year or 10,000 miles. I try to follow that until I get my by-pass on. (Soot) is the major contaminant in this one. But 20,000 is possible with a good synthetic without the by-pass.

I use 5W-30 Mobil 1 in my 98 chevy ext-cab Z-71 and Blackstone labs recommends that I change it every 3,000 miles.

Mine was on a 4cly 1.9L ford escort, running like mad across the hot texas from florida during the summer fully loaded.

I have extended mine to 10,500 miles.
I had NO filter change, all miles on m1 filter.
I had no top off oil, and due to high speeds of
80-95+ on that long trip, consumed 1qt of oil.

Since back, and driving like normal, I have 3,000 miles, no oil consumption at present.

This was done on SCHAEFFERS 15w40 SUPREME 7000.

Here is a link to my actual #'s.

Five cars
2 @ 7,500 no time period, just miles 10W30
1 @ 1 year filter at 6 months (8-10,000/year)0W30
1 @ 12,000 miles filter at 6000 miles 10W30
1 at 5000 miles or 1 year whichever comes first 10W30

All Amsoil products
My lab does not give opinion on the drain interval, just whether oil is good for continued use. I have established my schedules based on the results and driving conditions of the cars.

I have a 94 chevy S-10 and I use Mobil Drive Clean convential oil in it, I have posted an analysis of my oil at 8000 miles in the oil analysis folder. Currently have about 9500 miles on it. Last analysis I did looked like the oil was still pretty good. Will probably change out the oil sometime this weekend.

I've not run analysis yet on the 96 Impala 5.7 LT-1, so I've been staying with a conservative 7500 using Mobil 1 5W30 and Mobil 1 filter.

I did run analysis on my 84 Mazda 626 2.0 4 and 93 Olds Ciera Buick 3.3 V6. The Mazda was extended to 10k, and the Olds was extended to 11k, using Mobil 1 5W30, Formula and then Tri, and Mobil 1 filters.

So... very few of you go past 5,000 miles. Amazing. I figured you could go much farther than that.

Anyone on Amsoil's 25,000 mile schedule?

Troy, there are a few people here that are using Amsoil at intervals close to that, I think there are at least 3 or 4 analysis reports on Amsoil in our analysis section.

Problem is with the 25,000 miles---ITS VERY HARD TO DO 25,000 MILES IN 1 YEAR!!!!!!

I have done 10,000 miles no problem and have even went longer than 1 year (18 months). But this is not the recommendation of Amsoil. So as a dealer I would not recommend it either.

Looks like many of us go past 5k.

I have no problem making 25k a year.

7,500 miles for my cars using M1. I change oil every 6 months so the mileage figure is an average.

I go 5K using Mobil 1 10W30 and Puro 1

(I know, I know..... half you guys think I'm pissing away $$ because of the frequency)

99 4.0 SOHC Explorer 45K
99 5.4 EB Expedition 43K

Who was it that made a graphite oil with a long interval years ago? Any users?

So much depends on your vehicle, driving conditions, and driving habits it is hard to find a norm. I insist on 4,000 miles or 6 months for all my vehicles as there are a lot of deliveries, a lot of dirt, 80 octane gas, lousy diesel fuel, I overload some vehicles (1 1/2 tones in a 1 ton pickup), and other special conditions such as 30 minute mountain climbs with full rev's in low gear.
But I have customers who drive 40 miles to work every day with one passenger, never pass 55 mph and never leave the asphalt. 10,000 miles or more is super-safe for them.

For the last 10 years with Mobil 1/Amsoil (I take care of 7 vehicles)- 7 to 10K at about 10 months. I put a new filter on between times. As I start using Delvac 1/Shaeffers I will keep the same interval and of course use more frequent samples provided by Dave or Terry. (switching from Oil Analysts Inc)

Troy,

I have been using Amsoil since 1978 ...I normally run 15,000 mile/1 year change intervals, with a filter change and topoff halfway through using the Amsoil oil filters. I also run oversized SDF oil filters on both my vehicles ...the SDF-15 on my Audi 100 (2.3L) and the SDF-96 on my 2.4L Toyota Tacoma pickup (1995 model). This drain intervals are primarily with the Series 2000 (0w-30/20w-50) and Series 3000, 5w-30 products. Based on my oil analysis testing over the past 8 years, I consider this to be fairly conservative. I typically see a TBN of 7-9, with oxidation/nitration
This is also the change interval I recommend to my Amsoil gas engine customers and I have had excellent results with this interval. If you have technical and/or applications questions, please contact me offline.
