Okay just a curious question. Advanced Auto has a sale for Syntec 5w-20 for $3.97 so I was wondering how good is it. Would it be ok for 5-8k changes? Or should I be less stingy and get M1 for $4.88 instead. I posted a thread a few days ago concerning mixing different oils but I decided to go either synthetic or dino instead of mixing. Oh yeah its a Honda d17 non vtec in a Civic. I didn't find much info using the search. Thanks in advance.

Use the PepBoys Buy 3, get 3 free coupon and Mobil 1 will be $2.49 a quart.

too bad the closest pepboys is 30-40 miles away, i don't ever get to leave town so that's next to impossible.

The pep/boys coupon is in Sundays paper. They have their own little magazine section in it.At least down here in FL. anyway.I use 5w30 castrol syn&all is well.I'm sure 5w20 is just as good.I really like making my own brew best as i sometimes just bring a quart to the oil change and just let them mix it in with the dino.Works fine that way also. This way i know i have a full quart of syn.I don't use full syn. cause the car never had and it has 103k on it and only went to semi/syn at 90k.The dealer uses 5w20 semi/syn motorcraft&that works just as well.I use it in a 4.6 V8

Mobil 1 made 2 much engine noise awhile back on a Caprice i had so i back away from it. But others have no problem with it.I can't see using a oil that makes noise in your engine. To each their own.

Unless my vehicle was still under warranty & required that weight only, if I lived in the South, I'd use 5w-10W/30.

Castrol Syntec is a top-tier oil. This new Pennzoil Platinum may be even better.... waiting on some UOAs to find out.

yeah my car still has about two years of warranty left so i'll have to stick to 5w-20 for now. and what is a "top tier oil"?

The implication of the term, "top-tier" is one of the best, super duper, the best they is, none finer at any price, I gotta get me some 'o that, the cat's meow, supercalifragilisticexpealodocious . . .

I've never seen that coupon for M1,only the 3.99 quart one. Are you talking about this Sun. Sun-Sentinel?

Im talking about the Mobil 1 coupon in the PepBoys Calender that sells for $1.00

And inside you will find a bunch of coupons......including the Buy 3, get 3 free Mobil 1 coupon.

triple 7 mentioned pennzoil platinum so i searched and found a couple threads and one of them mentioned a release of a 20 weight version of it in july. does anyone have more info on exactly when it's going to be released? for some reason running synthetic gives me a psychological feeling of safety and security compared to dino, i don't know why lol.

It must have been released early, because Wal-Mart's in my area have had it on the shelves for at least a month now.
If I wasn't in the middle of an Auto-Rx cycle right now on my Focus, I would have already picked some up.

If it's the same Pennzoil Platinum 5w20,I am quite sure I googled some up for sale the other night.

I thought it was spelled as....
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?????

A top-tier oil is obviously a extended oil change synthetic (7.5K+) with a name-brand. A few off-names are fine for a little shorter oil change interval (5K). If you find an off-brand you like, the scientists here will advise you on it - before you purchase it.
