carwow did a real world UK range test in cooler temperatures to see just how far the cars are capable of going.

I've summarized the specs and findings in the table below:

VehicleBattery Size (kWh)Power (HP)Claimed Range, miles (km)Range, miles (km)% of claimed range
Tesla Model 3 Long Range75346348 (560)270 (434)78
KIA e-Nero64204282 (454)255 (410)90
Jaguar i-Pace90400292 (470)223 (359)76
Nissan Leaf e+62217239 (385)208 (335)87
Audi e-tron95408255 (410)206 (332)81
Mercedes EQC80408259 (417)194 (312)75

Looks like Jaguar and Mercedes were the most optimistic on range followed by Tesla then Audi. KIA is the closest in estimation followed by Nissan.

Interestingly, I believe Audi downgraded the range after this video was produced with a claimed range of 204 miles (328km).

The criticisms and observations are consistent with mine in my admittedly limited experience. I'm not surprised that Audi and Mercedes get the most positive feedback on the interiors. Note that the Audi goofy digital mirrors are not present on North American models, we get traditional mirrors.

  • Porsche Taycan outperforms its EPA range estimate by the widest margin
  • Every Tesla we've tested has failed to hit its EPA range estimate
  • There are four EVs in Edmunds' 300-mile club, including a Ford and a Hyundai

Here is another test. While these tests are not ideal, many of them are good enough to give potential purchasers an idea of what to expect under normal, daily conditions.

I can say this, my friend has a Tesla Model S dual motor, performance with the bigger battery (range was listed at 330 I think) , and we drove from Jupiter, FL to Miami, FL (to look at solar panels) which is about 200 miles round trip, about 80% highway. We made it, barely, with no energy left. Something like 7 miles remaining. The thing took hours to recharge in his garage, and I had to wait so he could take me back to the airport.

We've done similar trips a few times and the results never change, even on the FL backroads, where speeds are high. We must manage speeds and energy, just to be able to make it.
