How do you remove the rear hatch lift supports on a 2001 Pathfinder?

FWIW - on my volvo wagon, one must remove the upper plastic trim pieces from around the hatche's opening, and lower the roof liner a little. The "struts" themselves have a pop-on/off ball and socket mounting. Mine act up when it gets cold, but have yet to replace them.
i am so lame.
the reason i asked my question is that the parts company that i ordered from (rockauto.com) sent me the wrong liftgate struts and it confused me (as I thought they would be interchangable - i was wrong).
now i have to go through the hassle of getting them to take the parts back without having to pay for the shipping to and from (their catalog choice is incorrect for my vechicle).
dang it.
no one in town (except the dealer) has any in stock.
