Hi guys, I recently purchased a Can-am Outlander 800R, atv. Has a 800cc v-twin engine--lots of fun! Anyway, I know amsoil makes a 0w-40 for powersports apps as well as a 10w-40 for motorcycles. I prefer the 10w-40, my questions is how cold is too cold for the 10w-40 as far as easy starting goes. Can-am says for "optimum all season performance run their 5w-40 syn". Any input??

-10F would be about the lowest i would go for occasional starts. below that I would prob go with the 5W although the pour point for the 10w40 is -51F. if you are running around on the thing at that temps then, well, you are braver than I am....

For "easy" starting, I'd agree with the above estimate of -10 deg. It'll still pump below that but you'd probably be better off with a 0w-40.

That said, keep in mind that kinematic viscosity ratings are only a very rough indicator of how a lube will behave. When you're dealing with good synthetics, it's possible for a 10w-xx lube to pump just fine at temps that might start to scare another 5w-xx. Amsoil is usually among the best for cold performance, so if you really like their 10w-40 but you're worried about the occasional day when the temp drops below -10, rest assured that you'll probably be okay.

I have absolutley no intention to even be outside if it's -10f. I dont know what it is but the whole "0w" thing seems too light. I know that it indicates cold start up weight but it just doesn't seem right.

I agree with Johnny the MCF 10W-40 will be fine, and also state you need not fear 0W-XX oils. Look at some of the BEST oils on the planet. GC, M1, etc all 0W-30/40's....oh yeah SSO as well...

German Castrol (Castrol Syntec) and Signature Series oil for amsoil, the 0W30, is there top offering

M1 has a reputation of doing very very well in the coldest of cold

My point is not to steer you toward 0W-XX oils, just saying:

0W-30 German Castrol (GC)
0W-30 and 0W-40 Mobil 1 (M1)
0W-30 Amsoil SSO

Are are fairly great oils in their own right, not a thing thin or wimpy about them. No need to turn in your man card when pouring them in.....well OK 0W-40 M1 does shear a bit with use, but this is as designed and that is a whole 'nuther kettle of fish..

People just say I'm such a nut for Amsoil. Dunno why...?

Just kidding. I really wasn't trying to be sarcastic or anything. You got it figured out! Let us know how she runs.
