You know that taxes are usually paid twice a year right? Not monthly. Mine are $2k per year. I'm sure some people pay plenty more than that, but not many pay $2k a MONTH.

That's a really expensive house if it's 2k a month, but around here, some towns are quarterly or 4 times a year and some are just twice a year. But if you have a mortgage, it's usually factored in on a monthly basis and it's part of the payment.

I don't have a mortgage (home owner outright) so it's very affordable for me to live in my small village with less than 400 population.

yes I know that. Buy I would have to save $1k a month to pay a $12k tax

Where I live a ranch costs $400,000 and up. Taxes would be $10,000 on something like that. A 4 bedroom 2 bath would cost $600,000 let’s say and have taxes more like $15,000. At least the schools are good.

I don't live in a ghetto... just VERY rural/remote with a partial "agricultural/timber exemption"

Of course if you live in a 2 horse town your taxes will be low.

You forgot to mention the "price of admission" in California real estate is easily $400,000.00

Those paying low real estate taxes in California have lived in their house a very, very long time. Very, very few (with the influx of new population) are seeing the benefits of prop 13 (which originally a way to keep the elderly from being evicted due to property taxes they couldn't afford).
California's government is working on ending prop 13. FYI

How to afford it? By making more money.

I've seen in news that Palo Alto's affordable home program start with a $200k income as admission limit. That's not the price of a home but what it means is if you make less than $200k you are a low income family and can apply (still have to win it).

In my neighborhood there are many single earner family living in apartment of $4k a month, would probably be around $1.4-2.1M at today's price. You will likely need 200k/spouse to make it here but many if not most new residents do make that, and can afford to after deducting property and state income tax.

Not sure what would happen after the tax plan change this year though. It would be a huge impact to many.

I have often asked myself this same question. We left Illinois well over 10 years ago because we were tired of the high cost of living, 6.5k+ a year on a 225k house. We live on 5 acres now in a house valued at shy of 200k and pay less than 1000 a year in taxes.

Our taxes, Mortgage and Insurance are less than our taxes used to be.

You probably don't know much about the state political climate when you make that claim, and its impact would probably be low considered it will most likely grandfather in existing home owners.

Nice neighborhood = higher taxes.

What an Elitist, ignorant statement. I have been to Orlando and wasn't impressed.I would not pay high taxes to live in a swamp. Other than the fact it does not snow there, I dont see the appeal. Sprawl Galore and no character.

When the Monkees sang "Pleasant Valley Sunday" I imagine Orlando.

Yah. you know the tax rate is (too) high when the city/town employees are commuters. Everybody complains about taxes. I get it. My 3 kids went to good schools. The streets were maintained with good fire and police depts. The library network is outstanding. Great medical facilities. This is a place where I've managed to eke out a living.

No income taxes down there to pay.

I pay no income or sale tax so property tax gets us at $600/month for a above basic home in top 10 school district.

The home value is $460k but something basic/old/small in town costs $300k.

Wife and I both work and despite six figures drive 10 and 13 year old vehicles. Price to pay I guess for living 15 mins from beach and 50 mins from Boston with quality paying jobs.

No wonder that CA has the highest percentage rate of poverty of any state in the union,

Glad I move out a number of years ago to Oregon (no sales tax)...but has its own issues.

Stick around because MA services are superior to neighboring states for elder care and programs. My wife constantly suggests her over border patients move toMA toget approriate care.
