Chris, I'm with you.

I live in a 40yr/old 2800sq/ft home worth about $250K, on 1 acre lot in a somewhat rural, but busy road area. My total yearly tax bill is about $4500. My BIL lives 2 miles away is a $700K home on 10acres. Their tax bill is over $12K/year!

A friend in Mamaroneck, NY has an 1100 square foot home made in 1928. It's a very modest 2br home that would sell for $800k, and taxes top $15K per year. Sorry, but that's unaffordable. Anything smaller puts them in a one bedroom apartment.

[removed] California. Everything is over priced. I grew up there. Moved to Texas 11 years ago and I’m glad I did. My mortgage is 1100 with home owners and property tax.

You know that taxes are usually paid twice a year right? Not monthly. Mine are $2k per year. I'm sure some people pay plenty more than that, but not many pay $2k a MONTH.

There was a person in the other thread who paid $12K a year in taxes, hence the 1K a month comment.

By living in a trashy house in a town that also has waterfront property. I let the tourists pay the school tax.

Services are lame: I have to take my own trash to the transfer station, which pretty much is all I use my truck for. Ironically, this generates excise tax revenue for the town. The town hall is only open 4 days a week and I have to take time off from work to register a newly-bought car. (Can renew online.) Sometimes I get more than a foot of snow on the road in front of me before they plow. I have a yard plow truck, not registered, that I could plausibly drive down said road, as cops are few and far between as well.

Nice neighborhood = higher taxes.

Few want to live in a ghetto just to pay low taxes.

What an Elitist, ignorant statement. I have been to Orlando and wasn't impressed.I would not pay high taxes to live in a swamp. Other than the fact it does not snow there, I dont see the appeal. Sprawl Galore and no character.

When the Monkees sang "Pleasant Valley Sunday" I imagine Orlando.

I'm not being elitist, I just don't want the rims on my BWM, Benz, Tesla or Range Rover stolen....

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, among the states NY ranks in 39th place. I don't think you're getting your money's worth.

It varies by town and school district.

My taxes are $16k on a $650k house. It's public record so it's not like I am providing personal data.

Oh trust me socialism under Emperor Cuomo 2 here in Neuyorkistan is an ideal place to live well poor and breed like roaches.. Try ownin* rental property and believe me you will see it all, none of it good. No money to pay the rent but plenty to “work on my art”. Yea you guessed it, there’s just nothing like a fresh tattoo and a carton of smokes to begin a new day right. Don’t get in a wreck on Friday or Saturday night because the ER will be packed already by 7 PM especially if there’s a full moon or holiday.
The real secret to surviving well in NY is never buy a big nice house. You will bleed for it every year and fuel prices to heat a huge McMansion are astronomical.. You have to keep it small and simple so that “ others “ may thrive.......

Prop 13 was a good idea in 1976 but not now, very unfair. Especially because it includes income properties. Some pay $300 per year and the next door neighbor pays $40,000. They use the same services, and drive on the same roads. One pays $25/mo, the other pays $3500/mo.

That's insane! My parent's place is of similar valuation, they own three lots, and their taxes are like 1/3rd that

Property taxes are easily affordable by not living in Cali.
Of course, we've had a number of goose egg F mornings thus far this winter, so I can understand the appeal of the moderate California climate.
OTOH, what services do your tax dollars buy you that we don't get her for a fraction of the cost?
Seems like none.
This being the case, why aren't you showing up at counsel and school board meetings en mass and asking what they're doing with your money?
Most of California is an expensive place in which to live, but how much of this tax take is going to pay over- compensated and underworked administrative staff who got their jobs through nepotism?
How many of you here are aware of this happening where you live?
I can assure you that it does, despite state statutes that prohibit it.

My property taxes are $2300/year. Not much compared to a lot of places. That's what happens when you buy at the bottom of the market.

With property taxes well over $10k, now you can appreciate the issue NY residents have with the limit of $10k in SALT. So over $10k in property taxes plus state income tax.
