I agree, I was thinking about the "midday driving, 83 degrees outside temp", and all the folks that do short runs and never even get the oil up to 180°F.

A few years ago I was at a BMW sponsored track day. They actually had a rep' from the factory in Germany there and one participant asked why BMW's didn't come with oil temp/pressure gauges? The answer was "you don't have to be concerned if the oil temps climb high on occasion. If we had oil temperature gauges drivers would be unduly concerned". Translation, ignorance is bliss.
Perma-Cool has a thermostatic bypass valve for their add-on oil coolers that doesn't even open and send the oil through the cooler until the oil reaches 180°F. Oil needs to be normally warm in the ranges listed above. (Yes, "normally warm" oil burns skin and boils water...that the way it is.)
