Honda gc160 won’t start

I have a Honda gc160 small generator.. it won’t start just spits flames out the exhaust.. but if I loosen the bolts on the OHV cover , it’s starts up brilliantly. But soon as I tighten the bolts it cuts back out ,, wonder if anyone else had this issue ,, thanks

pull the valve cover and look to see if the valves are moving up and down. those things are known for seizing the exhaust valve at the stem .

Did it fall off a truck and roll down a gravel pit?

That engine is an OHC.

Yeah it’s seen some action in it’s life , the valves under the cover move up and down freely,

I'll bet that is the trouble. Cover is holding a valve open.

Took cover off and there are signs it’s been hitting the cover ,,, tapped the dents out of the cover and refitted it .. now runs , thanks for all your help much appreciated
