This bike has super low miles for a 1997 due to working 6 days a week. Total miles at the end of the interval was 4048. It was in the bike for 8.5 months and had 1703 miles on it. This is the non-SS version of Mobil's bike oil. Of course it was used very intermittently, but when it was used it was fully warmed before it was beat on. Usually used for longer trips from 100-300 miles per day. A moderate amount of hard running and always 2 up and in the mountains. We have seen 145mph a few times; very stable!
The following is a paste a cut from someone who was asking for samples on a motorcycle forum. I sent it and this is what I got. Interpretation help?

Prolly the things you don't understand-neither do I. Obviously you figured out that a lot of the items have a '1' after them. And I see what the 'average' viscosity is. They give the viscosity at 150 C. Don't know about the 'shear'. Sb is antimony clueless here. Don't understand the last 5 items.

I know this is little help-just wanted to bump up the post.

The report was free short of shipping the oil. I know Magnesium is another acid neutralizer as is the Calcium and Boron. No moly in this oil. Maybe someone else knows if the 1119ppm of Manganese is significant? The Lead of 1 looks good for the bearings and the Potassium of 2 seems to indicate no coolant present.
One of the reasons motorcycle oil samples have been requested is to see the fuel dilution amount, 2.3% seems high but it does have 4 carbs. Getting almost 45 MPG. At spec. At the 2000 mile mark the shifting was getting more difficult so I dumped it, a shame since the TBN is so high, and I am now trying the M-1 15-50. If this does not work out then Amsoil may be up next. This is a great bike and I am glad there are no red flags. Thanks for the input!

Yikes, what a mess that report is! Even if I take away the first “1” from each row, there are still values which make no sense. Some have a bunch of ones in front of them. I’d go back to the lab and ask for clarification for each row/value. Their format is the weirdest one I’ve seen to date. Lots of data (It looks like) but, like Al, I can’t make too much sense of it.

How much did you pay for this?

For what values I think I can figure out, I’ll comment:

Fe (iron) 25 – seems OK. Because this bike’s engine shares a sump with its gearbox, you are NOT gonna get single-digit values. Maybe a tad high for such a short interval but not alarming.

Calcium 2,340 – very healthy. Seems like an overbased oil. Good sign.

“Mn” is manganese. 1,119 seems awfully high.

So does a Magnesium level of 540. Someone who knows more about these additives needs to chime in.

Sb (antimony) is a barrier anti-wear agent. The same (or similar) stuff is found in Schaeffer oils … especially #132. Because this oil most likely contains no moly and just a fair amount of zinc, the antimony (or boron) has to perform this role. I don’t see phosphorous … its symbol is “P.” The value should be somewhere between 800 and 1,200 and I don’t see anything which seems to fit.

Viscosity is another odd one. If I used the average viscosity and compared it to “CSt @ 100°C” values, then it shows some thinning down … to a 30 weight. But I have a sneaking suspicion that this is an unfair comparison.

Sorry I couldn’t be more help.

Free? You got HTHS test for free? How do I get in on that?

What I find interesting is the large drop in vis and the corresponding drop in HTHS

Bump back up with a bit of clean-up to hopefully get some more feedback on the italics items or anything else. Does any of this info indicate an insoluble number? Could the Volatile figure be an evaporation test? Got another coming with M-1 15-50. Thanks for any more info!!

I think it's great that you got this comprehensive test for free. Some of the test (esp. HTHS) aren't cheap. Why the offer? What were they looking for?

Just someone working for a lab wanting used oil out of some sport bikes. Suppose, to determine the best oil to use for himself and others on a Honda bike site. I now have Amsoil in the sump so maybe I can get some more serious miles on it to test in the future. Still trying to fully understand everthing on this report. Help?!
