Honda Accord MPG

I just got back from a 1,500 mile trip, mostly highway driving. Jupiter FL to Wilmington NC. My 1996 Accord averaged just over 35 MPG. 2.2 Liter with automatic transmission. 153,000 miles on car. Amsoil 0w30 SSO and Amsoil ATF in trannie. High MPG of 37.4 and low of 34.3. I was shocked to say the least. I expected anywhere from 28 to 32 MPG. Does anyone else have any experience with this year car?

How fast were you driving ??

37.4 miles per gallon is about equal to the Civic gas mileage.

I manage to get a solid 31-32mpg in the TL on my usual 500+ mile weekly trip. Not bad for a 3,400lb car with a V6 with wider than stock tires and thicker than stock transmission fluid and engine oil.

I have a 94 Accord EX Auto
162500KM (100972Miles)

80% busy city/ 20% hwy
for 1 way hwy nth longer than 30KM (19 Miles or less)
& i hit the gas hard on hwy

the best i can get is 9.1L/100KM (28.85MPG)
the worst is 12L/100KM (19.6MPG)

Hopefully I can do some trips soon & find out whats the hwy MPG

I have basically the same car, a '97 Accord LX sedan with auto. The highest I've ever gotten was just over 30mpg on measured across 2 tanks of mostly highway driving from 65-70mph. Usually I drive 50/50 city highway and get 26-27mpg. I'd say you're getting pretty fantastic mpg, I think the original window sticker was like 23 city 29 highway.

In my stock 2001 CL-S I've gotten as high as 33MPG on one tank (on a cross-country drive where none of the 5 tanks got under 30MPG), and that's at around 75 MPH w AC on. I would be disappointed not to get 35MPG at 65-70MPH, but who can drive this car that slow for a whole tank?

I kept the Accord at a steady 65-70 MPH, using the cruise control only to relieve a leg cramp once in a while. The A/C was only used to clear the windshield occasionally.

First tank; Jupiter to Pooler,Ga. 407 miles 11.6 Gals = 35 MPG
2nd tank, Pooler to Wilmington,NC.449 miles 12.4 Gals = 36.2
3rd,Wilmington to Daytona Beach,Fl 532 miles 15.9 G = 33.4
Last tank, Daytona to Jupiter, Fl 220 miles 5.9 Gals = 37.2 MPG

Total average MPG = 35.4 OVER 1,600 MILES so I guess it wasn't a 1,500 mile trip after all.

BTW, The 33.4 MPG included some local driving in Wilmington.

My '02 V6 Accord Sedan gets about 24 in mixed driving, up to 30-31 on the highway (all seasons vs. snow tires, 60 mph, cruise). Lately I've been getting 21-22 - aggressive snow tires (and snow to go with them), below zero temps, etc...

Looking to trade it in on a Hyundai or Kia - something where the cruise actually works, the rattles go away, the mileage is better, there are more than 2 airbags, and so on and so forth.

Not a happy camper.

31 - 32 MPG on the highway is not too shabby for a V6, have you seen what the new Malibu gets on the HWY? In a recent cross country test, the best posted was just over 24 MPG. I think I read that in Motor Trend.

harry j, I'm not too surprised, actually. My 1995 Civic 1.5L used to get 45+mpg in the summer doing mostly (but not exclusively) highway travel. It's very difficult (but not impossible) to get my 2006 Civic above 40mpg.

The Hondas in the 1990s had a very efficient fuel injection tuned for fuel economy more than power ... and were a lot lighter than their same-model counterparts nowadays. Safety and luxury features on the newest cars add considerable weight or else newer cars would get even better fuel economy.

Sounds like your aged Accord is in great mechanical condition and you don't have silly aftermarket parts and accessories on it that rob efficiency. Do you also inflate your tires near the maximum? Drive with a nearly empty car? These are also factors that might increase fuel economy.

I keep the nitrogen pressure at 35 psi in all four tires. The car, excepting the suitcases, chips, 2 occupants, was empty. Besides the 1996 Accord, I also have a 1993 Civic. It used to get 46 MPG plus, until I changed all the wheel bearings and had a head gasket let loose. Now, it averages only 41 MPG on the highway.
