My brother is considering using Amsoil CVTF in his 2011 Honda CR-Z, which is used in multiple NASA HPDE events per year. He bought some Honda CVTF with a part number of 08200-9006 from a local dealership, but I can't seem to find any information on what specification it meets. Neither the owners manual or the factory service manual state which specification to use. Both manuals just say to use genuine Honda CVTF.

Any help is appreciated.

Here are some pictures of the bottle if it helps.

It would seem that this fluid is correct.. However what generation is this CVT?? Second I am quite surprised it doesn't specify it more clearly in the owners manual. My car it specifies Nissan NS-2 CVT fluid for my generation of Altima.

I would only use the Honda CVT fluid. When it comes to transmission fluid I believe OEM is the way to go. Amsoil makes very good motor oil which I would have no problem running in my car. But I just couldn't use their CVT fluid or any other after market transmission fluid. That's just my thoughts on that.

It does say not to use the hcf-2 fluid or any other fluid in the second generation CVT
So is this Honda CVT a second generation one ?? If so.. It would appear this is the correct fluid. If it's a third, forth generation CVT... I would not use it unless it's verified safe for use by a Honda certified mechanic.

I know the generation of CVT after my car has the NS-3 CVT fluid for their generation of CVTs. So this is a pertinent question to have an answer to.

Honda's second generation CVT started being used in 2013 and uses HCF-2 spec fluid. That being the case, the 2011 CR-Z must use a first generation CVT.

All the aftermarket CVT fluids say that they meet Honda HMMF, HCF-2 or both. Redline gives multiple part numbers on the comparability list after listing HMMF, one of which is differential fluid. Maybe Honda 08200-9006 is HMMF spec CVTF?

I agree with your thoughts on this. It appears this CVT fluid is for the 1st gen CVT for Honda. I would use only the CVT fluid from Honda. I've seen Sunoco, Valvoline, and Amsoil that all claim that their CVT fluids can be used in Nissans. I would not even consider using ANY of those CVT fluids in my car. The reason being what my owners manual states unequivocally and clearly that NO other CVT fluid should be used but the Nissan NS-2 CVT fluid.

I am of the strong belief that we can use their motor oils with ZERO issues. But these fluids for CVTs are very specific to the cars they are in. It's not like an API SN or ILSAC GF-5 oil that meets the specifications for not just Nissans but Toyotas and Hondas as well. Whereas the CVT fluid is very specific to JUST their own CVT. Plus what the manual states is reason enough not to chance it. IF the CVT transmission fluid was just like the motor oil in terms of meeting a broad spectrum like API SN and ILSAC GF-5 for multiple manufactors then I would feel comfortable with doing that. But this is just not the case with these CVTs. They are quite specific to their own exacting specifications and applications.

Thank you. I think we will keep using Honda CVTF.

Now we just need to monitor transmission temperature to see if it needs additional cooling on the race track...
