I just purchased a 5 quart jug of Yellow Bottle and a 5 quart jug of PP on sales. Both are 5w30. I have a 2012 5.7 Hemi, Ram 2500 I am wondering if I should consider mixing the oils, creating my own....Semi-Synthetic Pennzoil. What do you guys think? My Dodge Ram manual calls for 8k miles or 6 month OCI's. Do you think my home-brew would be good for that?

Since it is under warranty, make sure you follow manufacturer requirements. Keep all receipts at the least.

Mix away!

+1. Not sure what youre getting out of it, but whatever. Just make good records.

The only thought I had.... I have the oil, want to use it.... So.... Will it be better mixed or.... Used separately. I have a concern that YB will be good for 8k miles.

Certainly, I will keep the reciepts and document. If you will search my posts....I am the guy that fully documented my oil changes and got Toyota to give me a brand new 4.0L, V6 in my 2007 4Runner. I completely understand the importance here.

My knowledge tells me chemically/physically the mix will be fine. I would say the car manufacturer would NOT cover engine warranty issues if for some bizarre reason there was an engine related problem. Even though you are mixing two API oils, the resulting product is NOT an API oil. Heck, you should ask Pennzoil and Dodge see what they say.

And mixing conventional-synthetic API oil of the same grade by the same manufacturer is a no-no? Please explain.

Pablo....I highly respect you.... This is all I needed to hear.

Though you will be pushing the limits of PYB, it will hold up just fine in 8k. But I wouldnt push it any more

If you are concerned about PYB for 8,000 miles, why not change it at 7,000 and sleep better? Use the syn for the full 8,000 if thats what the book calls for.

Why bother doing this? It’s been spoken of so many times I’ve lost count that PYB is a group II+, loaded with additives. Do you live in Antarctica? If not, you are wasting your time. Just use full syn or regular. It would be much easier and the only difference you will notice is length of OCI between the two.

I think you'd probably be safer mixing two API certified oils from the same company, than using a non-API sanctioned oil in a new car. But here's the safest bet: use an API approved oil in the grade your car calls for and rest easy. No need to mix anything.

There you have it folks. If you're not in antarctica, you're wasting your time worrying about p[umpability. Seriously, everyone is so scared about mixing commonly rated oils and no one really knows why. That's the way I wanna live me life!! happy
