Hmm.. SynPower @ $15/5L... should I?

Hi all.

First off y'all rock. I've been lurking for quite a while and *wow*.. you guys rock.

My local Wallyworld is selling out it's Valvoline SynPower 5w30 for $15CDN for a 5L jug (been slowly dropping for weeks now). I've done a search but haven't found out *that much* about Valvoline SynPower. At that price should I go for it, or just use a conventional oil like Pennzoil 5w30 for the winter in my 03 Explorer w/25,000kms?

(Been using regular Pennzoil since new).

I don't know that much about it, but it's probably a Group III synthetic, which is fine, so long that it's priced right. And that's a great price...

Make sure it's relatively fresh, by checking that it meets the current API SL spec, which is probably what your '03 Explorer requires. (Check your owner's manual)

In cold winter temperatures, your engine will definitely turn over more easily with synthetic.

If this oil stayed at this price, it would be my permanent oil. I think it could be one of the best OTC group III oils out there. My UOA results were very good for both my Volvo and my Passat.

This oil has no moly, but the additive package is reportedly good. It is a G-3 oil. It's probably comparable to other G-3 oils, and for that price it's a good deal.

If your alternative would be dino PZ, I'd go with the Synpower at a competitive price. It is a group III oil, afterall.
