I’m at AutoZone and there’s a special on Castrol Edge. Can I can get the 5qt jug of 5W-40 and top off with 0W-40 “European Formula”?Sure, okay. But you said "Honda spec’d 10W-30 for these so just run that" as if one recommendation was all they gave.
Others need to get over themselves as well and give advice that is based on what's given. Considering the higher ambient there and the consumption on this engine the 40-grade is a better recommendation.
Good advice. I run MaxLife 10w30 in my 2000 S2000. It has an easy life and just used for weekend cruising. If I was taking it to the track I would worry more. All things considered, including the exotic nature of this engine (high-revving, and more in commin with a motorcycle engine than other car engines), my preference would be for a full synth oil with around 3.5 HTHS and low amounts of viscosity modifier (for clean piston rings). Also, having low amounts of VM, and relying on a high-quality, relatively thick base oil, means that the oil will do a very good job of staying in grade throughout OCI, despite your fun runs up to 9000 RPM!
Several good choices on Gokhan’s “Automated A_Harmann list”, including:
• Amsoil Heavy Duty ACD 10W-30 (which is actually a straight 30 grade, but the base oil is high enough quality that it meets 10W-30 standards) (0.62% VM)
• Motul 8100 X-Clean+ 5W-30 (2.7% VM)
• Ravenol VMP 5W-30 (2.63% VM)
The above 3 are basically boutique oils that offer very high performance, but another good choice that you can probably find on the shelf locally would be:
• M1 HM 10W-30. HTHS of 3.5, only 5.31% VM, and it‘s cheap compared to the others.
I have now fully automated my A_Harman index, effective VII content, and base-oil viscosity calculator by building in the ASTM D341 viscosity - temperature relation (Walther formula) into the spreadsheet. If you want to calculate these values for an oil, you can either (a) make a copy of the...bobistheoilguy.com
That was me!Yes, 10w-30 is specd for normal all year round use in the owners manual, while 5w-40 is specd for winter use, below freezing.
This "weird" reccomendation from Hondas puzzles S2000 owners for ever.
