High Mileage oil has additional friction modifiers in it which are designed to prolong the life of all metal parts within the engine. But, as for those people who get nearly 300,000 miles out of their engine using conventional, wouldn't this seem to refute the need for High Mileage oil?
Is it "really" all that necessary, and more of a marketing tool?

Yaah, I"ve read that...
Still, people are going well beyond 200k on regular oil. So what's up with that? Doesn't make HM seem so magical

There has been no practical test that I know of that proves High Mileage oils are better. They may well be better but in most cases the information is without controls or a reference. So, in the mean time, you pay your money and take your choice. For me, if I were running conventional oil with a high mileage engine, I'd try it.
