At 50K miles on my 03 6.0 liter PSD, I got 7 on iron...the techs said that we should watch it for the next sample in 5K. They also said this could be due to heavy towing but I only tow a 4500 pound boat...I have been towing it a lot lately. They said it could be due to a bearing. This was my first sample with Shaeffer's 9000 5W/40. Never had high iron before. Previous OA's showed Iron at 2-3.

Do any of you oil experts have any suggestions? Could it be the additives in the Shaeffers?

No expert here, but it would be interesting to see a VOA of the oil you're using to see if there was any residual iron in it.

Otherwise, curious at what mileage interval this sample was taken. If it was 5K miles, 7ppm of iron is still nothing to shake a stick at in my opinion. I notice in my Dodge/Cummins, the iron value is usually much higher during the winter months, compared to warmer months. And, did other wear metals spike at all? May want to post the entire report(s) in the diesel UOA section.

7? As in single digit "7". 7 is a great Fe number, regardless of engine.

Did you mean to say Pb (lead) was a 7? Even so, 7 isn't bad, but you do need to watch it to make sure it doesn't increase too much?
