help needed with oilchange

Hi all,

How bad is it for the engine to use one year fullsynthetic oil and the next year semi-synthetic oil? Last week the garage has put semi-synthetic oil in the enigne, while I've been using full-synthetic oil for years.
Is it better to keep using the semi-synthetic from now on, or is it better to throw in full-synthetic oil next oilchange? Or should I change oil rightaway?

I may not be understanding you correctly, but I think you should change your oil more often than once per year.

At any rate, I'm sure folks will chime-in as to the benefits of a full synthetic versus a semi... but I don't think switching amongst oil types from one change to the next is detrimental at all.

I only drive 5000 mls a year, so that's why. I've heared that changing the use off oiltypes can harm your engine. But I'm not sure about that. I intend to use full-synthetic from now on. I hope my engine isn't full with sludge.

No harm at all. You can switch between dino, syn-blend, and synthetic all you want, and it won't hurt anything.

I have had about 8 different types of oil (synthetic, Syn blend & dino) in my wifes 1998 Honda Civic. It still runs fine at 120,000 miles.

Yep, my Caravan has had so many transfusions of various types ..heck it just don't know what belongs in there. It thinks "Type A" means "all".

Bertje - Things will be fine. As far as sludge, you're point sounds extreme. Unless you are running EXTENDED drains on dino while making the engine a real workhourse, then I'd get to thinking. You'll probably be fine on the semi-syn for one year/5K miles, but if you rather, change this out sooner. That's all.

From what I've come to learn here is that synthetic base stocks are less prone to oxidation, and thus serve for extended OCI well. And there's more, but don't take my word for it - do a search.
