Hey Y''all,
You people seem like scientists! I have 750 miles on my 2005 Scion tc 2.4l 160hp. Could one of you oli doctors give me a prescription for oil change intervals and oil types. If 5w/30 is recommneded do I stick with it? I live in florida so freezes are not an issue, at least normally...
I want to keep this car a long, long time. Thanks in advance.

I'd look into 5k drains with GC (German Castrol 0w-30). You also have choices with Mobil 1 & Schaeffers as well. You only need to decide whether you would like an OTC oil like Mobil 1 (at your friendly Wal-Mart), or have the patience to order Schaeffers. GC is found at Autozone...just be sure that it says "Made in Germany" on the back!

The engine is the same 2AZ-FE used in the 4 cyl Camry. I have one with close to 20K miles on it.

I usually average about 40 miles per cold start, and the car frequently sees extreme high temperatures and long trips. A recent check of the oil temperature showed 229 degrees @ 80 MPH, level roads in 107 degree air temp. Seems reasonable enough.

I'm currently using Rotella synthetic 5W-40 and leaving it in 5,000 miles. I will probably switch to Delvac 1 5W40 and extend it up to 7-8000 miles. If I drove in cooler weather and/or shorter trip length I'd go with MI 10W30 or 5W30.

If you want to keep the car a long-long time, check into a bypass filter setup.

We have info on that too.

A good 5w-40 is a good idea. TPI has a good suggestion with rotella. I use delo 400 5w-40. Delvac is a good choice also. All three of these oils are hdeo with excellent add packages that minimizes wear on valve trains.

Do bypass filter setups really add more life to an engine to the average owner?

I've seen Toyota's come off auction blocks with over 300K miles with what I would call a "cross your fingers" maintinance history's run pretty well without missing a beat.
Service bypasses were the only time those cars had a "bypass" setup

Read onwners manual.
Any 30wt synthetic with a 5k oil change interval should give you an extremely long lasting engine(like most Toyotas). My Camry has the "Made in America" Toyota oil filter which should be good enough. Otherwise, use a name brand filter.
I'd also start the maintenance interval now.

The Panama City dealer treated my Camry and I like dog excrement. I'd keep all maintenance records(log book) and reciepts because of Toyotas warranty refusal history with certain sludge monster engines.
