There are 4 kinds of Denso filters (made in Japan) you can get for your Toyota/Lexus:

90915-20004: What comes factory-installed in Japan on V8 Lexus engines. Taller than 20003.

90915-20003: What comes factory-installed in Japan on 6-cylinder Lexus engines.

90915-YZZB5: Cheaper version of 90915-20004. No bypass valve, smaller surface area (fewer ribs in the filter).

90915-YZZB9: Cheaper version of 90915-20003.

The 20004 will provide the most filtering capability of the 4, and is the highest quality OEM filter you can get. Many Lexus owners with 6 cylinder engines opt for this filter instead of the 20003 (price difference is minimal).

I noticed Toyota/Lexus dealers using either the lower quality domestic-made filter or the cheaper Japanese-made filters unless you specifically request a 20003 or 20004.

Prices can vary widely on these filters depending on which dealer you go to. You shouldn't have to pay more than $8 for the 90915-20004 filter, yet the closest Toyota/Lexus dealers to me charge up to $14 for it.

I've got a 90915-YZZB9 in my hand that I bought from a Toyota dealer for under $5. It looks to be pretty good quality filter although I haven't taken it apart. It has quite a bit of filter media for the size of the filter although I don't see a bypass. I assumed it was part of the ADB assembly or located on the bottom...

I like the Japanese-made Toyota Denso filters, and see no reason to buy a premium aftermarket filter as the Denso filters are, IMO, premium filters themselves.

If you cut open the YZZB5/YZZB9 and the 20003/20004, you'll see the differences between them. For half the price than the 20003/2004 sometimes, the YZZB5/YZZB9 are a good value if you don't mind no bypass valve and less filtering surface area.

Personally, I stick with the 90915-20004 for both V6 and V8 Toyota/Lexus engines.

Kreativ,
would you happen to know of any part numbers for denso filters for the 22re engine? I've been buying them from a dealer in Houston for $3.50 ea, but my guess is these are US-made, not Japan-market filters.

Jim - As far as I know, the above-mentioned OEM filters are universal across Toyota 4-8 cylinder engines. Haven't ever seen any other Toyota Denso filter mentioned. I'm guessing you got the 08922-02011 US-made filter. If so, any of the Denso filters are interchangeable for your application.

I have the 22RE in a 92 4x4 and run the filter from the 6 cyl landrover for that year. This gives about 2.5 times more filter. Got that tip from a crewmember of Ironman Stewarts racing support crew while they were in Phoenix many years ago.

Gang,
I am thinking that there would be no difference in overall performance between these Toyota Denso filters and the the cheapest Purolator model avalible for the Sienna (L10241)if changed at a 3K interval. These more premium Denso units could be better for extended drains I suppose.

Probably.

But it can't hurt to have a better filter - the one that came on the engine when new.
