I just starting having this problem with my heat pump. It's a "Coleman Evcon."

When the inside unit kicks off the outside unit keeps blowing. This morning I noticed one of the copper pipes--the large diameter one--going to the house was white with frost.

I have tried leaving the inside fan "on" instead of "auto" but that didn't help.

I had to throw a breaker to turn it off.

The unit cools good.

Any idea how to fix this?

I'd say that the relay to the compressor is stuck. The inside fan cycles with the set point on the thermostat ..but the compressor ain't getting the cut off ...the relay isn't dropping out.

Edit - I agree with Gary. When you go to buy parts the supplier may know it is a contactor. If you change it yourself be sure to discharge any capacitors within reach, and of course cut the breaker or cutoff.

Something else - You should NOT (I can't emphasize this strongly enough) continue to run the system under these conditions. Because the indoor unit (the evaporator) is not transferring heat to the liquid freon and converting it to a gas, as would normally happen while the compressor is running, the freon is returning to the compressor in liquid form. This is a recipe for destruction of the compressor, although some have a limited capacity to handle it.

If you absolutely have to run the A/C before you can get the contactor fixed, switch the thermostat fan setting to ON, which will run the indoor unit continuously and allow heat transfer to the freon.

Problem Solved.

Local independent A/C man got here this morning and replaced the contacts in the outdoor unit.

Fifteen minutes and $100 later everthing works.

It was 100 degrees yesterday, I feel like I got a good deal.

Thanks!
