Would this oil give my little VW's turbo the protection it needs? I have a small stash of it & was thinking about using it in "Little Red".

FTR, I know the Havoline 5w30 syn. doesn't carry the VW 502 approval.

My VW has 52k miles on it & I don't drive it hard at all. So, what say the BITOGers?

Im sure it is a decent Group III oil, but I don't know how good Group III oils hold up in a turbo motor. Supposedly this oil has a very high flash point. I picked up 42 quarts of this oil for $1.00 each at AutoZone.

It should be fine, though I wouldn't run it longer than 5,000 miles without analyzing.

Wayne: Is it true that using a VW 502.00 approved oil did not become mandatory until 2005? So prior to that, isn't it true that anything API SL or better is sufficient for warranty purposes; VW 502.00 oil is only recommended?

Michael

I wouldn't use a Group III oil in a turbo....The EGT's are too high and it will tend to form deposits. It would be perfect to use in the Ford V-8 engine, however.

Michael,

The answer to your question depends on who you ask. The best I can do is to muddy the water a little more & give you the following. Below is an exact copy of what is printed in my 2000 VW owners manual regarding oil:

Engine oil
Specifications

Your engine was factory filled with an all season high quality engine oil that has a viscosity grade of SAE 5W-40. You can use this oil over all temperature ranges for normal driving. If you need to add oil between oil changes, use any high quality petroleum or synthetic-based oil with correct specifications. If engine oil viscosity grade SAE 5W-40 is not available, you can also use SAE 5W-30.

To assure that the oil you use is of the highest quality required by your car, the following terms must appear on the oil container singly or in combination with other designations:

Gasoline engine
- VW 502 00 or VW500 00 or VW501 01
- ACEA A2 or ACEA A3
- API Service SJ

Diesel engine
- VW 505 00
- ACEA B3 or ACEA B4
- API Service CF4 or API Service CG4

General recommendations
If SAE 5W-40 or 5W-30 viscosity grade oil is not available in your area, be sure to always use a viscosity grade suitable for the climate and seasonal conditions that exist where the vehicle is being operated. Always make sure that the oil meets the quality standards listed above.

TS,

Alrighty then......I'll keep using it in the Ford & stick with GC & your mostest favoritest M1 0w40 in the VW.

One of these days, I might even use some Amsoil in the VW.....who knows

Doing that will automatically double the value of your VeeDub...

I'd personally use the Series 2000, 0w-30 in both your vehicles ...you'll save enough just if fuel to almost pay for all the oil you use annually...

The S2000 provides stellar results in both these engines and you can increase the service interval by at least 50% beyond what you're doing now - or you can call me and I'll refund your $$$.

It's not a Group III thing here....you should be using a 5-40 (A3). Use the Havoline 5-40.

Does that apply to me as well?

Michael

wayne,
I used this exact oil/grade for around 7-8 OCIs, 5k mi. each, in my 1.8T A4. did UOA on about half of those OC's, and the Havoline worked really well as far as I'm concerned. Never really felt the urge to use the 5W40 version, although I'm sure it would have been fine also. aside from street driving, did several autocrosses and track days, some in 100F summer heat. oil has a tremendous VI, ~170.

To bad it's not the 5W 40. I believe that Havoline was the only one besides Valvoline to have a 5W 40 for several years.

Keep in mind you have 8 years total for that sludge warranty. If you want to keep in intact use only a specified oil and change every 5500 miles or less. There aren't many specd oils available but if you want to go with the one with the longest track record use the Valvoline Synpower 5W40. I believe it's now available at Advanced or Pep Boys--also any Napa can order it.

FYI,
If any of you guys really want 5w40 Havoline synthetic, find a Havoline oil change shop in your area. They will sell you the 5w40 Havoline synthetic for around $6/qt. Yes, that price is too high, but I don't think any retail stores carry 5w40 Havoline synthetic.
